Fire DePartment training on the farm

JD Sellers post below about the cow upside down in the trough reminded me of the training program that our fire department used to have. There was this old spinster lady that owned four hundred acres, and had a few animals. She didn't reallly have anything that was adequate income, so her buildings had become somewhat decrepit. She kept both cows and horses in her barn that had manure standing in water under it. It seemed like every two or three years she would have a horse or cow fall through the floor and have to be lifted up and out. Our chief was the old Yankee type, who always appreciated a challenge. He would go down to her farm and assess the situation, then gather a crew. he was always proud of all the rescue equipment that we had, and he would formulate a plan, and then we would go to work. Due to the lack of overhead and general weakness we might have to go above the immediate frame above to get a strong lift point, and of course a couple of guys had to go onto the manure pile under the barn in order to feed straps back up. We would get her animal back up above the floor, have some good rescue training under some what adverse conditions, and of course some good male bonding.
