how hard is it to use a 235 Chevy inline6 in my 39 M i want to do a 283 but Ive also got a 235 inline 6 i was thinking about using instead since i though it be cheaper and fit better and something different
Thanks

I have never done the swap, but having done many older trucks with 235 6cyl and 283 8cyl. the 235 would be my choice. In a tractor, the 235 would have much better low end torque and pulling power. The 283 is a great motor, but much less low end torque and lugging power. It needs to be revved to produce power.
Ideal engine would be a 261 6cyl. which is the largest of the 235 family and normally used in full size trucks.......and a real workhorse. Good luck

i have not yet im only thinking about the 6cyl since its in a 58 apache just thought it be easier than pulling my 283 out of my 59Apache i just don't want to put a M motor in it again trying to be different since everybody runs v8s in tractors and ive never seen one with a Chevy 6cly

Dad had an F12 with a Chevy 6,but they had more frame. How good are you at welding and fabricating? If you can lengthen the frame and hood and make it look good it would make quite a conversation piece. If not, something with more of a frame, like an Oliver or Massey Harris would be a better choice for such a project.

Go for it!! I'm working on putting a GMC 305 V6 in an MD.Again,GO FOR IT!!!Wanna 'race' to see who gets done first???LOL

well ive got a 59 Chevy that's getting built first but im getting a parts truck with a 6 cyl and thought it would work better the my 59 apache 283
..so mines not getting for for sometime

Before you get too excited, pull out the ol' tape measure and see where you stand. 6 cyl is considerably longer than a V8 (or the 4 that was originally in the M).

Get an engine out of a JD 4400 combine. I believe they used a GM 294 engine. Same engine used in Chevy and GM trucks as I recall. A real power house.

and if you wanted a real 6 cyl. engine with torque would be the 292 chev from the middle sixties. it has a long stroke.
its the big brother to the 250 cid.6 cyl.

Anything is possible with a deep wallet, time and a welder!
Not mine, but saw it at the Camp Creek Threshing show, near Waverly Nebraska this last July

I think I would choose one of the much large cu. in. versions...didn't they make a 403 cu in V-6, maybe larger..

Ron.

Yep,a 'big' engine woulds be nice. But they cost MONEY.The 305 is FREE. Given to me by a friend for this project. All I need to do is remove it from the old pickup.
