OT Is the end near?

For my water heater that is. I have a State Select 80 Gallon electric water heater. All of a sudden the temperature of my hot water went way up. I noticed it this week, gets too hot to touch, is it a sign? Thinking like how a small engine will rev right before running out of fuel.
I live alone and have not messed with the thermostat. Thanks .

Well water ? Bottom elements and the sediment eventually disagree, you can drain them periodically, one I replaced across the road was loaded right up, 2nd element I put in it, this time the unit was replaced.

Possibly one of the thermostats has come loose from the spring bracket that holds it against the tank. They read the water temp through the tank, if not held tightly against the tank, it will not transfer heat to the switch and overheat the water.

Another possibility, the contacts are trying to weld together. Tstats are not expensive and easy to change. Unless the heater is getting old or showing signs of leaking, probably be worth fixing.

Also, typically the operating thermostats are single line break.

If the element (usually the lower one) breaks internally and shorts to the case a portion of the element can remain powered even when the thermostat contacts are "open", causing uncontrolled heating 'til the safety limit opens.

I just had the same problem with mine- a new thermostat for about 20 bucks, 5 minutes to install, and I was good to go.

Word of advice- don't buy a "universal" one size fits all thermostat at Home Depot- go to a plumbing supply place and get an exact duplicate of the one you have. Reason? The universal will have the terminals in different spots, and you'll have to cut and/or splice wires to make it fit.

Thanks for the ideas, sounds like the thermostat and a reasonable cost repair. Will it cause any damage to wait a week or so, I am swamped with work right now?
