In the 4th photo it shows a piece of canvas / tarp over the horse pulling the wagon....what was the purpose ??

I didn't see the pictures, but we used a cooler if
the mules had been working so they didn't get
chilled standing there or a fly sheet if the flies
were bad in the summer.

Good question, I don't have the answer and the men that were there are all gone. Dustycoal may be right, may have to do with flies or chaff, I don't know.
