My friend Jeff has an 1850. Recently he had some work done, new clutch, fixed the hyd because the oil was getting in the tranny, fixed pto. Worked great for a few days, then the range shift quit working. It feels like it's shifting, but it's always in high range, so only 3 gears and 1 reverse. No previous problems like this. Any ideas?

Yes, shifter goes to all the positions and feels like it shifts except no gear grinding or meshing when you go between ranges and no shifting into low range

If the hydraul shift on the 1850 has its own oil supply (like the hydra-power on the older tractors), I think its just an unfortunate coincidence that it happened after doing other work on the tractor.

I'm thinking Ohio Mike is on the right track. It sounds like a shifting fork problem. Have you had to "force" the shifter into high or low range recently? If the "range shifting,(middle rail)" fork has lost his gear, I thing it will act as you have described. I'd sure be looking there first.

If I'm not mistaken, the 1850 has a different top cover than the smaller 4 digits. I think you can see down in the transmission without taking off the hydraulic unit. I believe there's a separate cover where the shift mounts isn't there?

If he is lucky, the two 5/16 fine threaded bolts that hold the center shift fork backed out and the rail is just going back and forward. If he is not lucky, better get ready to do some serious work.

Jon F,
My 1850 shelled out the high range side this spring while discing. Opened it up the the shift fork was worn, the shift collar was also worn. The input shaft was not pretty and there was some blackening from low lubricant flow. Too much crap in the transmission from not enough oil changes. Removed the hydraulic unit and the engine. We pulled enough parts from two other tractors and bought a few seals and snap rings to put it together. If I remember we spun the lube pump to make sure it was pumping oil real well. Took some time but we got the old gal running in top form again.
