Reproduction Parts

Have many of you heard of or seen a 3-D printer? I saw my first one on TV years ago but didn't give it much thought but then in 2010 when our daughter was a senior in Highschool they had one there and I got to see it in action and saw some of the items they had made with it such as a 3" ball bearing. It was fully functional. That and an adjustable wrench. From what I remember it uses what looks like weed eater string sends it thru a heated head melts it and builds the part in layers after the real part has been sent thru a copying machine. This is all about I can say or know about them. I read the article on 3-D printers in this month's copy of Successful Farming Magazine. Any part or piece can be replicated with this machine. Incredible!!
3 D Printer

My son went to a big High Performance trade show in Indianapolis over the weekend. He said those 3d printers were the most impressive things there. He said one booth had a bicycle chain that was made with one. Said the rollers rolled free of the pins and all. He said farther down the line, there was one that was actually making things out of metal instead of plastic. What kind of metal,I don't know. He said there was a powdered metal that they were putting in it.

Are you talking about EDM? That's not really 3D printing. They have one where my oldest son works. The boss sent him to Chicago to learn to run it. They call it a "Lights out machine". You program the computer then turn off the lights and go home. When you get back in the morning the part is done, but it's machined, not fabricated from scratch.
