Dell Latitude D620

After my windows XP became obsolete, I was going to buy a new computer. Well all the new one came with windows 8 and many told me I wouldn't like windows 8. A cheap solution was to buy a used dell computer off ebay for $175. It came with a new Windows 7. Home Premium 2gb Wifi HD Dell Latitude D620 Core Duo 1.6ghz Laptop PC. I then purchased a 2 year extended warranty. for $50. That way if I had issues, they would pay the freight and I will get at least my money back.

Computer has worked fine for 8 months. I use as a desk top replacement. It sits on desk all the time. Plugged in all the time. Use it for everything I would use a desk top computer for. Monitor two is wired to TV in living room for netflix. About 2 weeks ago after watching a movie on netflix I went back to the laptop, the LCD screen was black.

Now for the crazy part. If the charger isn't plugged in, the problem goes away. I have 2 dell laptops that use the same charger. We leave both laptops on charger, batteries are old. So I exchanged chargers. Problem still exists. If I plug charger in while I'm using computer, within a minute, #1 screen goes black, #2 screen works just fine. Laptop works great as long as the batteries stay up.

Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Just a guess: If you leave them plugged in all the time it's possible the battery itself is causing the problem. A new battery might fix it. No way to know but to try it. You can find batteries pretty reasonable on some of the Ebay stores sites.

A shorted cell or one that is dead could mess with the voltage.

I'm on my Dell laptop now with Windows 8...Transition wasn't bad from Vista and 7. Just play on it for a bit and you figure it out.

Anyway the battery issue...we use this in place of desktop too. Had similar issues. Was told to remove battery if plugged in all the time. Battery is on the table beside me...no issues any more. Why???I have no idea.

I have owned a few 610's and 620's over the years. They do run hot sometimes very hot. These laptops do well with an external fan cooler. I went through a few screens and batteries also. They do go.
As I write this I am looking at the last 610 pushed off to the other end of my desk. It just up and stopped last week. Power Supply went. Not gonna fixed it. Its reached its EOL.

Your laptop more than likely can use a new battery. I remember when one of my 610's stopped a few years back do to a dead battery a buddy of mine gave one that was actually an added battery that fit in place of the CD drive. Gave me another few years but that went too.

Most Dell laptops have higher screen resolution when plugged into a.c. source. This part of the screen circuitry has most likely failed. You can however right click on screen while on battery and double check the power options in display settings.

CBBC,
My son told me to remove the battery. Sure enough, the battery is the issue. I ordered one from ebay for $12.29.

The battery is a Li-ion. They have issues with thermal runaway. I'm guessing the old battery is over heating or something.
