Guard your Gleaner K's

I wonder if Machinery Pete will talk about this one?
I was so sure I was going to get this thing at an auction today that I hauled the gooseneck trailer along to bring the heads home. I came home empty. It's a 1969 K,it sold with an A330 corn head and a 10 foot rigid grain head, all on,brought $8000.00. No I didn't add a zero, eight thousand dollars!

There was an Allis D17 Series 4 gas with a wide front and snap coupler that brought $7500. A D15 3 gas, wide front and snap coupler brought $5700. Too much money in that part of the state for my blood.

Wow. There was a Gleaner K on Kijiji (a Canadian Craigslist type thing) for sale for $1500 last summer and it didn't sell for a long time. I don't know if he sold it or scrapped it. I thought about buying it but decided it would be too small. It only had a grain head and wasn't as pretty as that one, however.

Which auction were you at? Those prices really seem high especially on the D14 and D15.

Randy,
There is a clean Gleaner C on Sheridans December consignment auction. Its in Owosso.

Some people are crazy, look at the auction results on 2 of these 237 JD MOUNTED pickers, we have 2 237 and 1 227 in the sheds, might have to raise the insurance on them.

St Johns. onefarmer was there too. I left right after the combine sold. He might have stayed around and saw if anything else went through the roof. He can correct me on this if I'm wrong, but there was a 2000 Buick Century that brought $6300 or 6400. A 97 Ford Ranger 4x4 that I think ended up at $8500. The crowd parted like the red sea with people walking away when they had $6000 on that one. There was a 1979 FORD F-600 S/A GRAIN TRUCK ONLY 5,522 MILES W/ 13’ WOOD GRAIN BOX & HOIST, 370 V-8 GAS, 4X2 SPD,that sold right after the combine, but I was headed for the road when it sold, but with what everything was bringing,it probably brought more than it sold for new.
The sale bill is still up on the site if you hurry.

That looks like a nice Gleaner K combine. But way over priced. I sold a clean one in the late 1990's and only got $1500 for it.

I left home thinking I was gonna spend $1000-1200. When I saw how nice it was and how many people were crawling all over it,I adjusted that to $24-2500. The darned thing started out at $5000. I never made a bid. I talked to a guy who said he had bought another grain head for his. He said he wished he had bought the whole combine instead, said he could have gotten the combine and head together for $1000.

WOW! On all of them. The corn head looks practically new. Probably never was used much as it's newer than the combine.

Two combines ago I traded in a loaded K2. Diesel, hydraulic swing auger, bin extension, AC, air flow grain saver, Corn/Soybean special, etc. etc. Didn't get that much for it.

A little over 20 years ago I was looking for a Series IV D17. When I saw one sell for $5000, I bought a mint JD2520 instead, for the same money.
If I was ready to quit, now would be the time to sell the 2520, and my D15III !

Adding to what everybody else said, WOW. Maybe I should load my K and K2 and bring them to MI, lol. I would sell both of those for that and throw in a '67 Chevy C50. The K does look good and looks as though it has never spent the night outside. Even the tractors brought a premium. Could it have been family bidding against one another for this stuff?
Your experience today sounds like mine when I go to a sale expecting to bring something home. You should have left your trailer at home, then went back and got it, lol.

Dad was there today and told me about the combine. He said the grain truck went for $5000. Said they had a huge turnout for buyers today. Lot of people seem to be after some of the smaller equipment. Dad bought that 4 row international planter that was there. I helped him put it away tonight. I thought it looked pretty good for being that vintage.

My dad was there today too, was planning on being able to buy that combine for 3500 or so, really only wanted the corn head for his K2 diesel. Said everything was very nice and brought top dollar there. He thought he would buy it and drive it home, he only lives 10 miles north of there, but he figured he didnt need another K for that price. Witmer's Equipment in Columbiana, Ohio sold a Gleaner K in decent shape (few small things wrong) this past summer for $9000. I thought that was crazy. Apparently there is a market for very good clean used smaller combines right now.

I've been saying for years that if someone would build a small easy to haul combine with modern features like air conditioning and hydraulic unloading auger and a _quiet_ cab that they would sell on a specialist market. Problem is, to get people to buy, the price would have to be under $20,000. It probably couldn't be done for less than $60,000. Just look at what a new square baler costs!

I must say, that Gleaner K would have looked great in my shed for $5000. $8000? Maybe if all the belts were less than a year old, and all hydraulic hoses the same. With that much age, just sitting, too many things can go wrong.

I do miss my Gleaner K. I won't miss it this coming July when it is 90 degrees, 80 percent humidity, and I am in a wheat field in the John Deere 6620 Titan II sidehill... with air conditioning and a radio... 8)

(quoted from post at 16:53:55 12/06/14) WOW! On all of them. The corn head looks practically new. Probably never was used much as it's newer than the combine.

I'd sure like to find one of those D15 Series III's....since Allis never made one

That grain truck sold for somewhere around $5000. There was a Brillion chisel plow 7 shank went for $7500. It was a really nice one. The combine was like new. No wear in the wooden rattles. Bin auger still had some paint on it. I thought for the condition it would go for 4-4500 range. The equipment in the back was at least reasonable. 12ft packer for $250. 5 and 6 foot pups for $115. W JD 318 lawn mower was $1000. The two Kilbros wagons was $1000 each. And a Clipper fanning mill with bagger went for $500. I started drifting away at that point.

He should have got together with the guy who wanted the combine and grain head but didn't want the corn head.

If you follow machinery Pete there has been quite the trend of high prices on old equipment that's in good shape .

I was going to hit that auction myself but have had so much going that I just plain forgot. Glad I did, although I was up in that area today picking up something else. Kind of wondering what you want with that old combine? You looking for a project? I saw a K sell at a Stanton auction just a month or so back. I thought it was high. Believe it was in the $2K range. Had at least on head. I attended my first Sykora auction in a long time a couple months ago also. I thought they sold high on everything. I bought a header cart, got it home and don't like it so it is back for sale.

Back in 1969 I had dealers that would sell a new G Gleaner with a grain header for $10,000.

I just want a nice little Gleaner to cut oats, maybe open corn fields for the picker. My Oliver is getting worn out and I don't want to run it completely in to the ground. A little Gleaner like that wouldn't take up too much space in the tool shed.

If it was in really good shape it was worth it,I have a guy looking for a combine like that and all we've found are plumb worn out junk for less but then again you can drop big $$$ fixing up a combine pretty quick.

Nice try, but me thinks you are just looking for another toy. I have been looking at those old Gleaners for years and years. Probably still gonna buy one in the next couple years...unless those prices hold firm. At $8ooo for a K, my rotary is looking like a better and better deal all the time.

I think he said it was $2100 which was plenty but it is in nice shape. I figured it was set on 30 inch rows but it measures about 32 inches. I think dad is going to get it back to 30 inch rows.

I think you got a good deal on that planter. It looks like it is in great condition for the age. It's getting harder and harder to find those in good shape. Most are going to fencerows to make space for newer planters in the shed.

What are your plans for it? Restore? Use for fun on a few acres? Or is this your new main corn planter?
