(quoted from post at 18:24:02 11/28/14) Beins I am a once part time tv repairman, back in the days when color tv came out and all, convergence issues and on and on, if you have a 40 year old tv you don't have much. My arithmetic puts your set in the early 1970's, making it a tube type and they (the tubes and if it was a circuit card, unlike the "Hand Wired Zenith" with no circuit card) just don't last that long. The heat of the filament of the tubes burned up the el cheap circuit card and the connections became melted and unsoldered.

LED is an LCD. The difference is in what is used for the light source. LED is pretty much replacing the earlier CFL illumination.(quoted from post at 18:28:30 11/28/14) Make sure you buy an LED. Don't waste your money on a LCD or plasma. Best price I found around town on a 40" flat screen was at Target.
