Sometimes I'm just not a shppper. Is Walmart about as good a bet as any? Probably get a Vizio or some such.

Thanks,

I bought mine from Walmart online on black Friday two years ago and had it shipped to my local store. Saved about 40%. I'm real happy with my 60" Sharp.

In my humble opinion, Samsung makes some of the best TVs out there.

Got a nice 52 inch a few years ago. now I can actually see the tv.

IMO, Samsung is good, Visio low cost and low
quality. LG is decent. Sony is good. Magnavox used
to be good..
I am little out of touch but worked in tv repair
12 years. before moving up to commercial
electronics..

We went to Best Buy and got a Insignia 50"LED for $450. It was a return (for some unknown reason). It was in the box on the floor with several others close to the store entrance. The salesman told us he would rather buy a return because they have to check them out and make sure everything is accounted for and to make sure it works. It's been over a year and it's working great. I would buy another return from Best Buy. Has to be LED though.

I used to get the best deals from NewEgg.com. No more. Walmart has had the best deals I can find anywhere. Just bought a 50" Emerson LCD TV last night for $218. That is an amazing price for any 50" Hi-def LCD TV.

Got another 50" LCD TV last year from Walmart for $349 made by Sceptre. I have used these TVs side-by-side with namebrands like Sony, LG, Vizeo, etc. Very few differences other then price. Vizeo company is similar to Sceptre. Both companies based in California selling TVs made in China.

My first LCD widescreen TV was a Syntax Brillian I got at BJ's Wholesale in 2005. I had a few people telling me it had to be junk because it was so cheap. Well here it is 2014 and it's still working perfectly. They went bankrupt in 2009 and Emerson bought them out. So I hope my new $218 50" Emerson I got last night proves to be as good.

I've got one of each of these. Hard to beat the Walmart support and prices. If nervous, $28 buys a 3 year 100% warranty.

Close to 40 years ago we bought a Philco tv.
It is still good as when it was purchased, the kids keep telling the vife and I we should get something more modern. I don't throw things away just cause they are out of date, and still working.

We have had Vizio sets for over 5 years and they are still nice and sharp. This last April Wwhen everything went digital we bought 3 more Vizios and after 4 months one got a streak on the screen. Since I bought them online, Vizio replaced the set within 3 days and I sent the bad one back to them at their cost. The only other set I would buy is Samsung but the price is usually higher. ALSO, VIZIO IS AN AMERICAN COMPANY AND THEIR SERVICE IS IN MINNESOTA. nO FORIEGNERS TO TALK TO.

We bought a Sharp several years ago. The very knowledgable young man that waited on us explained that there are only about 3 companies that build the screens, and about 2 or 3 companies that build all the rest of the components, so it really doesn't matter what brand name is on it. Just go for the best price.

Glen, around here I simply price shop Walmart and Best Buy and HH Greg and some or all may even offer price match so do your homework. Its hard to predict which brand (especially if major ones) may provide best service, maybe consumer reports or another rating agency can give you advice or ask your brother in law or Billy Bob or Bubba their preferences, in this case it may be the best out there lol. I've had god luck with Sanyo and Sony and Panasonic and RCA and JVC over the years.

That being said, in our area there are a few old fashion mom n pop appliance dealers who have been in the business like 40 + years and if they have the same unit anywhere near the price of a huge impersonal national corporation big box store, Id consider purchasing from them. At least you have a local real person and a store to go to in case of trouble versus the help desk at Wal Mart. Still, Ive never had any problems when I go to Wal Mart with such an issue.

Shop around, do your homework, lots of bargains out there, but Id stick with a major brand.

I replaced my Rca flat screen tv couple months ago with a Vizio. I refuse to pay for tv so I have free over the air tv. My Rca was bad with digital signals but the Vizio is 10 times worse. If I'm lucky I get 3 stations. I've read complaints later that Vizio's tuner isn't very good. If you pay for tv you'll be ok supposedly. It does everything else fine like dvd players, kids Wii, and blue ray player but I just can't watch tv with it.

Beins I am a once part time tv repairman, back in the days when color tv came out and all, convergence issues and on and on, if you have a 40 year old tv you don't have much. My arithmetic puts your set in the early 1970's, making it a tube type and they (the tubes and if it was a circuit card, unlike the "Hand Wired Zenith" with no circuit card) just don't last that long. The heat of the filament of the tubes burned up the el cheap circuit card and the connections became melted and unsoldered.

Certainly is a bit of irony in your post seeing as how he already had had 40 years of service without problems. :D

60" Sharp here. Great for the $$$. Another store Fred Meyers price matched Walmart. Didnt have to deal with the hand to hand shopping there....

I heard on the radio the other day the best time to buy a new tv is right before Super Bowl I guess there's some good sales then as well as the companies trying close out the previous years model.

We have a Samsung and a Phillips on antenna. The Samsung will pull in more channels than the Phillips. The first chance I get to replace the Phillips, I will get another Samsung.

Make sure you buy an LED. Don't waste your money on a LCD or plasma. Best price I found around town on a 40" flat screen was at Target.

Come to Amsterdam,NY and buy a used car or truck from Mr. HUGE. Included in the deal is a LG 60" flat screen. How can you beat that, HeHe.

I may not have much, but I watch a 40 year old tv every day. Right now I'm watching Pickers, later on I will vatch Ancient Aliens.

Just Stick with e the 1080P, and the 120 Refresh Rate...Which Will Give Much Sharper Pix, And I , Like Someone else here said.. Im a TV repairman from back in the late 60's and 70's. Larry

LED is an LCD. The difference is in what is used for the light source. LED is pretty much replacing the earlier CFL illumination.

Plasma has many advantages over LCD, but is becoming an obsolete technology as manufacturers are abandoning it in favor of LCD. About the only advantage of LCD over Plasma is that LCD works better in brightly lit areas (like a typical store display area).

And a lot of those sets get returned right after the Super Bowl! I've been noticing that the last few years. People are taking advantage of the stores that have a "No Wuestions Asked" return policy.

Buy a big flat screen TV, have people over for the game and then return the set and get their money back.

Back in about 1985 they did the same thing to Home Depot. Bought backup generators and when the storm was over they returned them. Going into the store in the nearest town a week or so later, I bet they had 30 of them lined up on the front isle for sale, "used". Personally I have a little more personal pride and sense of decency than to do that. I kept mine and have it today.

we have 3 flat screens. 1 LED 1 LCD 1 Plasma! People are negative about the plasmas, but I can tell you, they have the best picture! The main thing is you don't have to be 'square' to the screen! The LED and LCD, if not watching squarely, the colors change DRASTICALLY!

What ever the brand . If it isn't 1080i , LED and 240Hz. Don't bother bringing it home .
Bigger is better. We watched a 20" CRT for 18yrs and thought it was ok.it quit so we bought a 26" CRT and thought it was wonderful. Then we bought a 32" LED and were amazed at what we had been missing. A few months ago we bought a 55" and now consider the 32" a pip squeak to watch . And use the 32" only when Mrs B&D has decided she wants to watch lady shows on the 55".

But Loren, he hired the blonde bimbo so you don't have to watch him so much! Lol!

Ever wonder where he got the money to expand his Empire from nothing the country wide so quickly?

I'm a certified tight wad. Our TV conked out , my son told me it was time to move up to a flat screen. Wrong, I went to the pawn shop and bought a 25" GE regular TV for $25. That was 4 years ago. When it conks out if I can find another I'll do the same. There ain't anything to watch anyway.
