OT PUSH BUTTON TO START A TRUCK

Have an IHC Paystar 5000 with the 466 diesel. To start you turn the key on and then push a Button. I have to hit the button numerous time to get it to catch and roll the engine.

QUESTION Do you think I have a problem with the push button or is it maybe the starter etc. any help is appreciated....thank you
 
It could be anything, get a test light and start at the push button and work towards the starter until you find the issue.
 
One like that could be one od many things or a combo of things. Poor battery connection will cause that as will a switch going bad or poor connection. Or a solenoid on it way out or dirty. Only way to know for sure is trouble shoot it. I would try a wire from the solenoid to the battery post and see if it spins over as it should. Of course make sure it is out of gear and blocked so it can not roll etc
 
All depends on what is actually carrying the current to the starter-motor. A big truck engine is likely to have that starter button wired to a relay somewhere and it's the relay that carries the needed amps.
 
Love these new designs.

My '51 International has the same system...you turn the key to ON, and then push the button on the dash to engage the starter.
 
While it could be the button itself, Id first suspect a faulty starter solenoid or a loose or burned connection (battery or cables or grounds) or the starter motor.

One thing Id look at would be the big main battery and ground and solenoid and starter connections looking for one that's loose or burned or corroded. Maybe remove n clean n wire brush all those big main cable and battery and starter and solenoid and ground connections n see what happens.

I have no wiring diagram but that push button probably just feeds a low current signal to the starter solenoids small activation terminal (or perhaps another small intermediate relay) and since its relatively low current compared to the starter solenoid, Id suspect another cause first.

I have seen a bad starter that takes a few hits before it engages, but its hard to say sitting here whether its the starter itself or starter solenoid or a bad connection which Id still suspect over the small push button.

I"m going to assume you've got a Delco 42MT starter. Wiring with starters that big often uses a relay, and also a thermostat for some apps. I.e., when the key is "on", and you push the starter button, power travels to the relay. When that closes - power goes to the starter solenoid (a 2nd relay) and the starter cranks.

If your starter has a thermostat- that prevents the relay from working if it thinks the starter is too hot.

We have a 78 IHC 2010A with the 537 with the same design. We had the same issue. What we found was there was a delay between pressing the button and the starter turning. Press and hold the button for 1-2 seconds and works every time. Not sure why it does that. Took the first year having the truck to figure it out. I went over all the connections and couldn't find anything wrong. Of course it feels like 10 minutes for the short delay.

If that's true that's interesting....I never owned that particular truck and have no wiring diagram for it either.
