Ford 8N Lift Arms, Need Help...

Well, I got this Ford 8n all done and I drove it out of the shop, hooked it up to the back blade for the lady, and it won't get it off the ground?

Un hook, go back to the shop, yep low on oil (brand new general purpose hydro trans oil) So I top it off, try it again, no go, come back to the shop and put the cross bar with the 2" ball on it on the tractor, and have my dad stand on it, and it will just barely pick him up???

So what is going on? Never had a problem like this? Pump isn't making any rattling noise like it is in my 2N?? Wrong oil? What?

Is there something I should try to test for something?

Thanks! Bryce

bryce, is the pto engaged? on the 8n, it must be for the hydraulic pump to work, check and repost

also if th pump is weak originally the 8n does not use hytran like a modern tractor they used 80-90 gear oil the hydraulics rear end and transmission are all 1 common sump and all use the same if you need to try changing the fluid to the gear lube it takes 5 gal for all if i remember right

When the lever is laying down the arms do nothing, when it is up they try to do something.

Yes the pto is engaged.

I am going to look into getting a pail of 80-90, on hind sight, that stuff I put in there is very thin, and that is probably why it doesn't want to do anything...

I'll drain the system and put that in it, and see what it does... Thanks for your help! Bryce

When you do add the new oil, don't over fill. That is the quickest way to make rear axles seals that are on the edge go bad. When you are adding oil, pull the bottom bolt out of the dipstick cover and as soon as oil starts coming out there stop. Should take a little over 4 gallons.

Very likely you have a cylinder ring problem or a blown gasket on the pump. You need an FO-4 IT shop manual to start with and then pull the dip stick inspection cover and have a look see as to what is going on. You should see almost no oil movement and if you do that is the area where the problem is. Good chance you need the new improved NAA type cylinder piston and o-ring and back up washer and maybe new pump gaskets. I had one that did the same thing and it had a blown pump[ gasket

I had to pull the pump out of the one I did and clean all the sludge out and free up a piston. Not too bad of a job, but gasket was kinda spendy. I would do that before I pulled the cylinder. Also it calls for mineral oil, which is quite a bit more expensive than hy-trans.

Do what Eldon says. Get the 90 wt mineral oil. I bought my last 5 gal at TSC for about 48 bucks.
It says on the bucket "For Pre 1952 Fords".

Sorry. That should be 1953

Do I need to remove the seat and stuff and go in from the top, or go in from the bottom, or split it in half?

Not sure what gasket you mean? Then one for putting the pump back on? I will try that, and get some of that 90W mineral stuff...

Thanks!

Pump assembly drops out from the bottom...that big plate with all the bolts holding it on. Hopefully you can save the gasket.

You need GL-1 not 80/90, Even with the thin 134 in there you should have had some lift. My 49 works with 134 but it knocks pretty bad, with GL-1 is sweet. Go to the N board, there is a test done through your inspection port to diagnose pump problems. If done improperly it can cost you a finger.

I don't think that the oil is your problem. I have had the 134 hydraulic-transmission oil in my 8N for over 10 years and have had no problems. This tractor gets a fair amount of use. The only difference I have seen is the hydraulics are faster in the winter.
