valve stem hole

What is the size of a valve stem hole on a rear Oliver 77 RC rim? The old hole was rusted out and am going to have it welded up so i will need to drill a new hole thanks

Like Bill says, I use 2 5/8's flats brazed together. I then grind 2 sides off and cut a hole in the rim where the original flattened place with the hole was. Grind it after welding and you'll never know it was repaired...Ron

Billpa has a good idea. I think I would move the hole though. Kinda get the hole to a non-rust problem area would be my goal. Be sure to paint the repaired area and the new hole no matter what you do. You should be able to measure the hole on any rim or measure the new valve stem in the groove with a pair of calibers to get the measurement.

Bill PA, your answer explains a lot of problems that this country is having with all kinds of issues. Nick asked what size of a whole to drill to allow a valve stem through a rim. You told him how to do a different repair than he had in mind, with no idea of how big the rust-out was, and then never told him what size washer to use if the hole was repairable with a washer.
Nick the hole should be 1/2" and either relocate it and patch the bad spot or weld in a washer as sugested, if there is not a lot of deterioration.

Have you found good solid steel yet? I got a surprise on the first one patched. I thought it would take a big washer to repair. As I ground away at the rust the hole became about four times what I first thought.

I move them to another spot on the rim too.
I'll have to double check, but I think I drilled the hole 5/8"
Could always measure the tube to be sure.

BTW, if you're worried about that little flat spot for the stem nut,
heat the area where you want your new hole and use a piece of
steel square stock as a punch to flatten it. Then drill your hole.

Weld in a solid patch over the rusted area. Then drill your stem hole the opposite side. I think I dilled a 1/2" hole. Measure the stem diameter.(i believe it is 1/2". 5/8 hole is way too big.

In the shop I have an original Ford hat rim and a new
aftermarket 28" 6 loop rim. The valve stem hole on the
Ford measures .640 and the aftermarket measures .620
Others may be different, that's just what I have here.

I have moved several on pulling tractor rims. When you use dual rims the valve stem tends to be on the inside, not good. I believe 5/8" I have never worried about it being flat. I fill the other hole with a 3/8" carriage bolt.

for rusted rims, I have a scrap rim I cut pieces out of and get it welded into the rusted area, after I cut out the rust spot in as much of a square pattern as possible. The scrap rim is never the exact radius, so I hammer it to close as fit as possible. I drill a 5/8" hole in another part. Since I always put tubes in, 5/8" works just right. If it was a tubeless repair (doubtful with a patched rim) the hole would be ??? I don't know and will probably never try.
