I raise corn. I notice thatsome is bright yellow some is more orange, some is yellow with red....Ever wonder "why"?

Ever look at the evolution of corn? Lot of strange looking mutations over the years. Used to have a lot of fun with the kids this time of year. I would plant a 20x40 patch of indian corn. We would husk them all by hand looking at the different colors.

Different genetics in the seed. I had 3 different numbers of the same brand of corn this year, 2 numbers were the normal pale yellow and one was almost orange in color. When I was kid in the 60's, I helped a neighbor pick ear corn and unload into the crib. Once in a while you would find a red ear of corn with a white cob. Always saved them, not sure what he did with them, but had to save them. Chris

I've tried some indian corn .Doesnt do well here.Wont mature/dry down.Too short growing season. We grow 100/105 day max

I was just thinking of that as well. We used to set the red ones aside, for what I don't know lol, probably just to look at. I guess it was just because it was different. We used to keep some of the real long big ears as well. With the way seed is now days you don't get them anymore.

We brought some blue corn back from New Mexico from friends outside of Santa Fe, at San Ildefonso Pueblo. There along the Rio Grande, the corn would grow around 3' tall. In central IL it grew 8' tall. My wife took some ears to the Apple & Pork festival that sold fast. Now blue corn is very common. This was 30 years ago.

I have noticed that the darker colored corn is usually higher in test weight. I used to raise a DeKalb number that looked almost like candy corn it was so dark. I sold some of that variety one year that had a 63 LB test weight.

I notice the early Cargill corn was a real pale yellow almost white in color. The test weight was never very good. The yield was not there in the mid 1980s either.

Always curious...I know where you live, W. CO...Here, we"re frozen, harvest is mid Oct into Nov, sometimes Dec. You plant slightly longer hybrids, 100-105? How dry now? We typically dry with LP...only occasionally dump into bin with fan only. Like once in 20+ years.

Here's the color variety that came out of our garden this year.

The corn I'm in now is around 13%.No corn is dried here. We have such a dry climate,we dont need to_Our 'target' date is April 15.Our days in July/August get to 95-100*.But the nights can cool to the 50sI usually cant get it planted till May 15...One thing that hurts us is we have cold noghts, theCorn stops growing at night.Sometimes May is cold,so corn will struggle till June. Most of our corn is harvested in Nov/Dec.Only the best operators who plant EARLY can even start in late Oct.
