We used to see 510 and 710 John Deere tractors around here from tome to time. I understood they were built in Germany, and shipped in as a cheap alternative to the better main line 1010 2010 tractors. Never have I seen any mention of these tractors on YT or have never seen one in tractors ads. Anyone have one ? Bruce

Hey Bruce from what I understand they were shipped to Canada not the US. They were a bare bones basic tractor with less than ideal hydraulics

(quoted from post at 21:46:31 11/25/14) We used to see 510 and 710 John Deere tractors around here from tome to time. " better main line 1010 2010 tractors" ? Now that is a joke. The 310/510/710 Lance 10 speed tractors with the 300 series Dubuque engine design where much superior to any 2010 and superior than a diesel 1010.
Canada was on both the European and US distribution network. The Americans tended to be isolationists and bought mostly from Dubuque until the mid 40 series. Then Dubuque utility tractor production ended leaving Mannheim to build all utility tractors.

Bruce the 510 and 710 where only made two years 1966-67. They where an early design of what the later JD utility tractors would be come. The hydraulics was an issue on them and was replaced with a closed center system in the later model tractors.

I am not sure how many of them where built. I have only seen a few down here in the US.

My wife's cousins had a JD 510, 710 and 2010 all Diesels. I drove the 510 a couple times. So long ago I can't remember any likes or dislikes. I do remember the transmission shifting was different.
Several were sold in Canada, competing against MF 35 and 65, IH 434 and 624.

Theres a 710 for sale here just west of Edmonton, factory loader, around 4000 hours, believe advertised for 6 grand. Been for sale for several months. i looked at it, went to my Deere dealer, asked about available parts and was told not a good purchase, parts take a long time to get shipped in if available at all.

When JD purchased the Lanz factory in Germany they inherited a newly designed Lanz back axle & transmission. Dubuque JD diesel engines were fitted and designated the 510 & 710. I think there was also a very small model 310 sold in mainland Europe.

The 710 was sold in small numbers in Britain, it was expensive against the equivalent size/power of MF 165 & Ford 4000. At that period JD had only just re-entered the British market with limited number of dealers selling the 4010 & 5010.
