OT, Savage .270

Anyone have one?

Like it? Hate it? Does it kick?

Looking at a Savage .270, bolt action, 4 space clip, scope, guy thinks that he wants about $250 for it? Talk him down a little, to $200? What do you think?

270 is a good caliber, pretty flat shooting, doesn't kick too bad, our sons girl friend has one. Savage is supposed to have a good trigger, don't know any more.

Bought my .270 in 1973. Love it. Killed a Proghorn in Wyoming at a quarter of a mile. Shot whitetail in MO. at 40 yards. Coyotes at 400 yards.

Good all around gun.

The .270 is a .30-06 case, necked down to take a .277 diameter bullet.

Kick is no worse than anything else in that category.

$200 seems like a really good price. Mine is a Remington 700 BDL, but I like Savage guns. I have a Savage inline muzzleloader.

Jump on that deal!!

.270 is a great caliber for deer hunting and I've take plenty of hogs with it too.

Savage makes a fine rifle. Nothing fancy but functional and dependable. I wouldn't hesitate at the price if the bolt wear is minimal and trigger is smooth.

Heck, you can't find many scopes for that price these days.

Bryce, have .270 in savage and remington both. No kick and no bite. Wouldn't hesitate at buying it.Have killed many a deer and elk with one.

I have seen some REALLY good specials advertised lately in the newspaper flyers from gun shops on bolt action rifles. I don't remember the exact details but I'm sure there was a NEW Savage for less than $200 was the popular calibers like .308 and .243

$250 sounds pretty fair to me, guess you can offer less and see how it goes. That's a good gun for deer hunting.

The Savage Axis and the Remington 770 are both extremely cheap rifles that are poor seconds to their model 110 or 700 rifles. I doubt you saw even these for less than $200 but you might have seen the Axis for $250 or so as a door buster.

I just went to look at the latest flyer from fin feather and fur in Ohio and the Savage is $ 199.99
I have never owned one but that's a heck of a good price and I'm sure it will do the job.

I think there was another discount off that a month or so earlier.

Love mine. Accurate as heck. Holds a group a close group at a 100 yards. Some have an accu trigger. I've heard those are great. Plus a 270 is a great gun. Use 130 grain bullets. My pap always said that they were meant for 130 grain. They shoot pretty flat and can take down most big game with one good shot.

Many of the gun company are getting rid of end of the year stock. Many have drop many models and will come out with new models after the Shot Show in Mid Jan.
Gone are these:
Mossberg 4X4
Marlin X7
Remington 770 and some 783
Savage Axis = now will be AxisII

They call us every day trying to dump these. You will see them at Wal-Mart, Dick's and stores like this till they are gone.

I had a Savage 110CL in .243 and I loved it until I found out I was right eye dominant. I started shooting right handed and started shooting much better, so I sold it. It was a good gun.

find the model number and do a google search and find some prices. .270 is a good deer gun but I shoot a 25-06 which is a little flatter projection, but not as much foot pounds of energy at impact. Friend shoots a 270, and sounds like a cannon compared to my 25-06. Grew up on .243 which is a great gun. Only own 1 savage and it is at 17 HMR. my 25-06 is a Ruger and the .243 that I grew up on is a Winchester lever action that is worth some good money. Think it is a model 88

If it has an accutrigger, buy it. That's dirt cheap. If it's an axis, Probably not a bad deal but not a steal. Savages with accutrigger are by far my favorite rifle.

The Model 110 and 111 Savages with the accu trigger are darn good guns for the money. They are tack drivers, too. The .270 is a good all around caliber for most big game hunting. With a good premiun controlled expansion bullet they make a decent elk gun as stated below as long as you use your head taking your shots. Another advantage to the .270 is that you should be able to find ammo about anywhere on the planet you care to hunt. $250 isn't a bad price. I wouldn't hagle too much on that. If it doesn't have the accu-trigger, then I'd not feel bashful about offering a bit less.

For 250 bucks, the scope is probably a clunker. (That might explain why its owner wants to get rid of it: a bad scope will turn an otherwise accurate rifle into a boat anchor.) Figure on spending at least as much on a new scope as you spend on the rifle.

The 270 in a synthetic stock will kick harder than it should but certainly manageable. I have the Model 110 and 11 in 30-06 and .308 respectively and both rifles have had to have their rings replaced. The Savage rings are junk. This may be why you are getting such a good price on the rifle. I am a big fan of the Savage rifle and like the previous poster said, the accu trigger is a real dream. I would buy another and at 250 I wouldn't blink. Leopoldo STD rings (low) are on both of mine now, btw. Aaron
