The other beach

This is the tiny beach at the western side of Dinas Head; 2/3rds mile across the Istmus pathway. There is a small pub & restaurant, very busy in summer with tourists. Several locals have fishing boats for Lobster & Crab.

Looking from mainland towards Island Farm

Looking towards the mainland, fields on the cliff top are the ones ploughed & sown in previous photos

In autumn the un-cultivatable areas are alive with yellow Gorse & purple Heather

Beautiful area. Do you raise any Sheep on your
fields?

There are more pictures of your area on Google Earth.

I was raised around boats & the ocean, too damp for
me, that's why I'm a Desert Rat. LOL

The farmer who rents Island Farm has 300 acres of grass leys and owns 60 more acres nearby. He runs 2000 pedigree
Llyn ewes & fattens their lambs to slaughter weight which is an intensive stocking rate. 3 to 4 ewes per acre is more normal on permanent pasture on poorer soil farms, there is only a few inches of soil above native Slate rock.

This immediate area is predominately upland grassland, mainly raising sheep & beef cattle ; with some dairy herds of 300 to 1000 cows on the more productive land up the coast.

Late 80's I raised 2 Ewes on 1 Acre (pets). Bought
"Momma Ewe" (Merino) already impregnated by a
Mouflon. Waited to see what results would be. Sheep
are DUMB, even though Momma Ewe had a nice warm, dry
place to give birth in, she chose to give birth to a
single baby Ewe OUTSIDE IN A SNOW STORM, and then she
went into her warm dry shed and refused to care for
her baby. I had to take it in the house and bathe it,
warm it up, and feed it with a baby bottle. Named the
baby "Ewe Too" or (Ewe 2, U-2, You Too) , cute as the
dickens - dirty-White with Tan booties, Tan stripe
down the spine, & upper half of the tail was dirty-
White and lower half was Tan. When it rained, both
Sheep would stand out in the pouring rain instead of
going into their shelter. Tails were not removed -
MESSY. Ever try to give a Sheep a bath, it's a lesson
in futility. NEVER AGAIN!

Howdy, used to raise sheep & sheepdogs ( u got one, u need the other) Seems they would ALWAYS birth in snow storms and late @ nite. Spent many a nite staying awake listening to the "baby monitor". DON'T miss it.

Beautiful pictures. Have a question. How far do you have to go to deliver your products?

I've been raising sheep for right at 20 years now. Shetlands for years, switched to Katahdins about 3 years ago.

I've heard about every story there is about how dumb sheep are and how they spend all their time looking for a way to die. Hasn't been my experience.

I've lost two to causes never determined over the years, and I've had the occasional ewe drop twins and choose to care for only one of them, but by and large, they've been trouble free. I've bottle fed one and assisted in one birth. The rest of the time it's been "Oh, look, Mary Kate had her lambs!"

Part of that is no doubt because both breeds are considered "primitive" breeds and are selected for ruggedness, easy birthing, good mothering skills and docility.
