OT, Better Built Truck Boxes...

Alright, so I am still undecided as to what I am going to do for a truck box.... SO, I figured I would tease a few guys in there at Big R the other day (North 40 Outfitters now).

So I am in there, and they have the size I want, diamond plate aluminum, and it is about $330 (already more than the DeeZee box on Ebay)

I start talking to three of the guys that WORK there, they ALL said that the Better Built box is poorly built, and that the bottoms of them fall out VERY easily. :

All three tried to sell me the same size box, but it was a Delta (which I have heard mentioned on here as a GOOD box) But they wer 7-800 bucks?!?!?!

I am leaving the store, and I run into a few guys that I have know through logging/farming for along time, and they BOTH have the exact same Better Built box that I was looking at, and one guy told me that it is the best of the best, and the other said that he had to rebuild his shortly after loading it up?

Sooo, I am tossed!

I think that the DeeZee one ebay has a better rep. and it seems to be a little better quality at a better price? I assume it is the better price, because there is no middle man...

I am still thinking that I am going to go with the DeeZee, and then put a sheet of plywood in it, what do you guys think? Anyone want to try to talk me out of it?!?! :)

Mine is a Delta. Got it at the Farm and Home in 1998. Yes, the bottom did try to fall out, but that was in about 2011. I popped it back in, added a piece of 1/2" plywood in the bottom, and kept on truckin'.

Bryce, I Do wish You were closer to me, in South Central Texas I would Sell You an RKI Steel Crossover, 20 in wide, 14 in deep, Casket Lid, toolbox! I have had for many yrs..... at Half of that new box a the Big R store. It is a really nice, really good shape in White. That would leave you $150 to get it shot the same color of your truck at a reputable Body shop!
I have seen the Cheap, Cheap boxes fail more times that I can count! In the end IT is your money, IMHO that cheap box will not Meet your expectations, Be what you want or Need in the long run! A quality box will out last 2 or three trucks!!! I found my box On Craigslist So look some-more!
Hope this helps

.
PS, The reason I stopped using it was I Found a RKI "Grand Canyon", Casket Lid, Style Box, 30 wide goes to the bed floor Deep!

i have a home depot husky brand on my 06 w/t. have the shallower version so i can haul a stack of plywood in the 8 ft box. wasnt very expensive and i load the snot out of the box. no problems at all. i think the box was only a couple hundred dollars.

Toolboxes are like the Deere agco fiat debate one guy says its the best in the world the next will biggest hunk of junk he ever owned . Find one ya think you like and give er a whirl . The biggest thing on boxes is the way the latches are made the cheap bend out of shape and then the lids don't want to latch .

DeeZee has two grades of boxes. I have the jumbo hi end crossover box on my turck. Nothing wrong with it except struts failed after 7 years.

I have 2 long DeeZee side boxes that are 10 inches wide. They are very flexable, not nearly as strong as the delta's I once had. My delta's were only 8 inches wide. I think I paid $1000 for all 3 boxes 7 years ago.

At the time, DeeZee's were the biggest. If delta made bigger boxes, I would definately spend the extra money.

I ordered a special diamond plate box to mount on implement trailer from amazon. It came with a dent in it. Poorly packaged. Amazon gave me a $35 credit for the dent.

Before I would order anything from ebay, ask seller what happens if it is damaged in shipment? I had a seller say if you opened it, he wouldn't take it back. Ask first.

At one time Rural King carried DeeZee boxes. Do a side by side comparison with delta and DeeZee. They are both diamond plate aluminum. Delta's were a little heavier.

My 2 cents for what it's worth.... Save up and buy a decent used utility body for your truck. Working out of a truck box you will soon find out whatever it is you need has worked it's way to the bottom of the box and is covered up by chains, binders, grease guns, pry bars, and jumper cables all of which are tangled together in a big oily ball because the couple bottles of oil got smashed and mixed with the half smashed tubes of grease.
With the compartments in a utility body you can keep things organized, tools in one or two. Chains and binders in another. Penetrating oil, starting fluid, grease and other consumables in another compartment. One shelf for commonly used parts like a couple spare sets of plugs, wires, wire ends, bolts and nuts and hardware. Still have the whole bed for gas, diesel cans, oil jugs or large parts. Something to think about.....

You want a good one, get an RKI ( Rawson-Koenig ) - everything else is an 'also ran'. Would give 'Weather Guard' an honorable mention. If you want cheap - it doesn't really matter much. Just my $.02.

I got tired of taking mine out and putting it back in because I need to use the whole bed many times. I sold it on Craig's List and got a DU-HA to put the essentials in behind the seat. Since I even get groceries in my truck I use a rubber made type tub in the back for that kind of stuff. Works great, and only cost $10. I added a couple gallon plastic bags of sand for weight in the bottom of the tub. Nobody has stolen anything from it yet--knock on wood.

I have a black plastic one that worked fine for me till I got the transfer tank/tool box combo...you can pick it up Wed for $80....should hold you over for a couple of years till you can make up your mind LOL!

If you're not going to put much weight into it, one of the cheaper ones should be fine. If you put a lot of weight into it, you'll need to go heavy duty and plan to spend a few hundred more. I've got a RKI and it's built like a tank.

Nooo, I think that I am going to get this Dee Zee online... It will never have chains/binders or anything heavy like that in it, only a few receivers, pins, an SMV sign, MAYBE a grease gun, just little stuff... DO NOT want it so full of crap that I have to dig through it every time I want something!!

In all seriousness, here is the list of stuff I think will be in it:

2x recievers
SMV
GreaseGun
20 Foot Chain (maybe, will probably put it under neath..)
A sack of Cat Litter
Set of tire chains

And maybe a few small tools, or even a little tiny tool box...

Nothing major...

We shall see, I am sure I will change my mind again a few more times!!

Can't wait to see your place and meet you Wednesday Eldon! Talk to you soon! Bryce

Wouldn't put in plywood, it'd just trap moisture and rot out the bottom quick. I make sure the drain holes stay clear, and elevate the box an inch or two above what it sits on.

Bryce,
I checked by DeeZee boxes. I have a jumbo Gold series crossover box. It's great. Guality of a delta. The long boxes are larger than normal. Competors series, not so good of quality. I think I could easily pry them open.

So if all you are looking for is price and not quality go with the competors series.

I'm not sure if at the time I was buying boxes, 7 years ago, they made gold series long side boxes.
