12.95 oil change

The Ford dealer where we bought our 08 ford edge said they will give me a oil and filter change for 12.95 What could go wrong? The car is due, and for that price I will not have to go underneath the car. That is almost worth the price. I can't remember when was the last time I had someone else change my oil. At 72, maybe it's time to start. Since we can't just dump our oil on the ground anymore it usually ends up as a big mess trying to catch the oil in a pan with just enough room under the car to slide under, then trying to find a dump station that is not full. I have enough oil to get rid of with my tractors without adding my vehicles. Stan

Yes, you can't do it yourself with quality parts for that! I quite doing our car and truck a few years ago, they have gotten harder to work on and I'm not a flexible as I used to be. Our local GM dealer does it reasonable including a wash and vacuum.

Bought our Durango about ten years ago, and the dealer sent a coupon for a free oil change. Went over there, and they changed the oil. Then they hit me with a bill. It was extra for the 318 engine, extra because it was four wheel drive, extra to 'dispose' of the old oil, and extra for 'shop supplies'. I've been changing it since, and it costs me less to change it with a synthetic oil and a long life filter....

How many quarts was that, usually my truck filter is 5-9 bucks depending on what truck, and then oil is usually always $3 plus a quart so I'd only be able to buy four quarts no filter that'd be a no brainier for 12.95 for filter and oil. Was it max of five quarts or something.

When I bought my F250, the dealer had a free first oil change w/FINE PRINT that ended up costing $50. I do them myself now, that is after I get healed up from a broken arm. I put the used oil back into a empty 55 gallon barrel and give to my local shop for their furance.

Recently, I took my 2002 Lincoln Blackwood pickup truck to the local Ford dealer for a special priced oil, filter and lube, seems like it was $19.00.
The results was that It needed a set of head gaskets, Labor cost estimate was $1800.00, Gasket set and misc another $400.00
I checked the Head Gaskets, I found no trouble. I took it to the best independant shop in this town, they just laughed at the so called 'needed repairs'.
I think that this the main reason, just to get repair jobs in their shop.

I to am 72 Wife drives Ford escapes and I still do hers but the last two F 150s I have had have a cover over the lower part of the engine and the filter is a hard reach. I go to local quick change shop they charge me 15 bucks with me furnishing the oil and filter. And like you I won,t crawl around under the thing for that. I use synthetic oil and go 5000 miles so not too bad.

I agree....they are wanting you in to find other more lucrative repairs. The tire shops around here do the same..."free" 26 point safety inspection when you bring your car in LOL!

Have you read the specs on that synthetic? I have run regular oil 7500 miles for 60 years and some 1.5 million miles with not one engine related failure.
Your syn oil is good for at least 10K. prolly 15 at minimum

Dealer charges me 40 bucks to change the oil and rotate the tires. Get a car wash coupon sometimes, sometimes they wash my truck and my Enclave has had one change since I got it, but they washed it. After pricing the filter and dexos, I can hardly do it my self that cheap.

As a former Ford tech, I can tell you that they will change your oil and filter. If you drive a Ford vehicle, they will probably use a genuine Motorcraft filter, but the oil could be the oil of their choice, even though it will be good oil. Then they will give you their complimentary "safety inspection" free of charge. They will go through your entire car and twist your arm to replace a bunch of items that may (or may not) need replacing. This "service" is their loss-leader. They won't make any money changing your oil, but they hope that you will be back for all the other "safety" items that your car will for sure need.
Take a cue from Nancy Reagan and be prepared to just say "NO!".

Good Evening Stan
I have always changed my oil & filter , the only time the Dealers change it is the first OIL CHANGE after purchase .
I won t go to any quick oil change places , I ve heard too many horror stories .
I am 75 & I guess I will continue until I get down & can t get up .

My 2003 F250 5.4 engine started to leak oil from the right head gasket. Started using Valvoline 5X30 semi-synthetic for vehicles with 75000 miles. It had about 120000. has 180000 plus now just leakes enough to be dirty. I was quoted 1000 labor plus parts. This fall put over 1000 miles pulling a goose-neck grain trailer grossing 28000 to 30000. Never used any oil. Lots of trips to the bins. Vic

Dealers are so dumb. They let the car companies dictate how to run a business. The local dealers here do the cheap change. Let me assure you they will not use Motorcraft parts, the one here uses the cheapest oil and filter they can find.

Dealer told me to bring the new vehicle back for it's first oil change (for free). When I got home, I crawled under the vehicle and found that they had not re-installed the wire to the oil pressure sending unit.

I'll be 80 in a couple weeks, but I still change my own oil. Maybe that's why my vehicles last so long?

Hopefully the "stubborn old fart" has set in at 72, because that $12.95 oil change is a loss leader to get you in the door so they can upsell you on a bunch of other services your car "needs."

That is if they don't hit you up for a bunch of surcharges.

I pay around $60 for an oil change, which comes with checks and top-offs of all the other fluids, a basic inspection of the vehicle, all lube points greased. They try to upsell me on other services, but at 215,000+ miles there really isn't anything that's worth changing other than engine oil at this point. Even that's getting to be an iffy proposition as the oil change is 5% of the truck's book value.

You can get away with that with some engines - others you are asking for big trouble.

GM's HFV6 that they used in the 2000s in lots of Cadillacs (3.6) is a perfect example of how you can destroy an engine going 6K+ between oil changes even with synthetic oil. Their light duty timing chains and sensitive hydraulic tensioners need the oil changed every 3K or less. Hundreds of thousands of those engines have self destructed following the manufacturer's recommended oil changes. The Chrysler 2.7 is another.

Gurdo I know it is pretty much a n over kill but flip side is in the last 35 years we have not had any engine related failures. Run a fleet of 8 ford f 150 here on the farm and trucking business. Go somewhere around 150 to 200 thousand before we trade them.

You can't do it for that using cheap parts. The oil alone (even using the cheapest Wal-Mart Supertech oil) is at least $12.00 for 5 quarts.

I took my F150 in for a Ford dealer oil change. Two days later and 500 miles away from home, I opened the hood to add windshield washer fluid. The oil cap was laying down on the intake manifold. They told me one of my aluminum rims was bent and needed replaced at $250. I told them to pull it and mount the tire on the spare steel rim. They pulled it out of the bay and I walked around it. Two lug nuts were missing on one wheel after they did the tire rotation. No apology from them.

good for you to keep changing your own oil!

I don't like ANYONE else to work on my cars. I have a good friend who is a mechanic and i trust him to do the bigger/harder/more complex stuff and tires. but anything else... if something goes wrong and i do it i know how to resolve it.

yeah at $12.95 they will try to sell you lots of things. I didn't even like taking ours in for the "free changes" when it was new. buggers (used to be Hall's in mishawaka) ended up scratching up the new car with the "free" car wash.

I bought my 1995 Chevy pickup new. The dealership was giving free oil changes for as long as you owned the vehicle. I am still getting those free oil changes today and every time I go in for one they ask me when I'm going to trade for a new one. I just laugh and say when the wheels drop off.
