Gas regulator question

A friend bought a cabin and they gutted it. He wanted me to come over with my tractor and level out an area for him. He took out the 100 lb propane tank and run a new line which is 1/2 inch. This will run his water heater and cook stove. He asked me if he needs a 2 stage regulator or a single stage. I do not know does anyone here know so I can call and let him know. He plans on a 100 lb tank as it is only used part time

Two stage. Where I have a long, underground run, a single stage regulator was placed at the tank. It drops tank pressure to 5-10 PSI. Then another regulator was placed at the end of the line, just outside the building, which dropped line pressure to about 1/2 PSI, before going inside.
Where I have tanks right next to buildings, they use a two stage regulator right at the tank.

It's like electrical wiring but you need to calculate pressure drop instead of voltage drop.

A propane hot water heater along with a stove with four burners and an oven will have a max total around 80,000 BTUs.

1/2" OD copper pipe with one single-stage low pressure regulator can serve 80,000 BTUs up to a 55 foot length (11" of water column).

1/2 copper with dual regulators running 2 PSI for the long run to the cabin can go 100 feet and serve 104,000 BTUs.

Very good advice. SOOOO many people have no clue about gas. I have seen LP tanks at over 25ps. pressuer and things got real exciting when a stove was hooked up!! Three foot tall flames from the burnners! Again.. very good advice.

I'm not sure where your info came from but it doesn't match my Rego serviceman's friend it would be 5/8 OD copper. Also a single stage regulator isn't rated for indoor use it needs a twin stage regulator or two stage system.

Thank you. And I didn't even get into the water column thing like jdemaris did. I think the 1/2 PSI I mentioned is roughly equivalent to 13" water column?
