IHC model LB Stationary engine

I picked one up at an online auction this week. I knew nothing about it and did some google work, learned enough to have a clue and then started looking at it. The mag barely worked but I cleaned the points and plug and put a new wire on it and it was throwing a good hot blue spark. Checked the fuel tank and someone had the good sense to put some kerosene in it so it wasn't gummed up or rusty at all. A quick rinse with some gas, some new fuel and an oil change and I spun the wheel and it yanked out of my hand and started running! And this was in 20 degree weather so I think it'll start pretty well all the time. Now my next question is.....What can I use it for? I'm surprised at how quiet it is. It just sits and makes a soft "whumping" noise much like a small air compressor. I'm going to see how much trouble it will be to hook it up to my #32 grinder....I can see a new obsession starting.

That's a good idea but I'm not sure that at 1 1/2-2 1/2 hp it would work. I'm trying to come up with a way to run a water pump for my garden this summer or something similar. I just tried it again about an hour ago. Popped right off. And with the temp at 20.

Here is mine with a modifies Enterprise # 70

Love those little LB's. A farmer friend of mine had one that we used in a drive through corn crib to run a drag conveyor to get the corn out. It would start with a couple cranks after sitting 2 weeks in 20 below weather! Just kept the hopper full of antifreeze all the time.

Nice picture! That answers one of my questions about the pulley. I can see that it doesn't take much to change it to whatever you need. I'm going to have to find some uses for it. It runs too well to just sit there.

well of course it started right up. There's a
reason they stopped making engines like that.

You go out of business pretty quickly if your
product never breaks down and it doesn't need a
highly trained repair man to fix it.

You probably know , the pulley runs off the camshaft which turns 1/2 the rpms of the flywheel on the crankshaft. I run the grist mill at about 1/2 throttle .It just sits there and grinds corn.

Get some ice cream freezers and use the engine to turn the crank. Would be a nice end to a summer day listening to that engine run while making pail of ice cream.

that's not even cold yet. they will start at minus 40 , just pour warm water in the water jacket. we used to pump our water all winter with one of these.

I noticed that the pulley turned slower and I figured it was probably half the flywheel speed. I've mostly got the math worked out for the pulley setup to run my meat grinder next deer season. I'm just really impressed and surprised at how easily it starts. Turn the flywheel to the compression stroke and as soon as the mag snaps it just takes off running. A 5 year old could start this thing. Pretty cool.

Was at the Shaker museum down near Albany,NY several years ago. There was a J.D. hit and miss in one of the barns I was walking through.I walked over and was looking it over.I gave the flywheel flip.It fired. Some of them did start real easy.
