harvesting corn tonight - PICS

When one field over,
There arose such a clatter
I jumped out-a my 'puter chair
To see what was the matter…

Spied the neighbor’s renter
Down through the trees
Yep - harvestin' corn
at THREE degrees!

They’ve got 2 big combines
Gobblin’ up corn -
Shakin’ snow off the stalks
Sure makes it look like a storm!

It really is DARK
And it sure is COLD
Bet they’d rather be home,
If the truth be told.

Seeing these sights
Sure makes us glad…
We get a check in the spring,
Cuz’ we rent-out our land.

(quoted from post at 04:43:37 11/21/14) What could possibly go wrong in a strange rented field on a dark winterish night?

Rented doesn't mean strange. Most likely the renter has been on it for years and knows it like the back of his hand. One of my more enjoyable farming experiences was spreading the last load of manure for the day just after dark, with snow swirling in the work lights and Christmas carols playing on the radio.

Thanks!

Doing pretty well (other than we're just getting old and tired... LOL). Hope you and yours are doing well too.

Coming up on the least favorite time with year-end stuff at work... so looking at 3 annual reports coming down the pike soon. :(

Thanks.

Wish the photos has turned out better - but I still liked them. (Apparently cameras don't like single digit temps.)

Sweetfeet, Ya done good on the poem! Can you make one from the farmer's point of veiw? I like shelling corn at night, warm in the cab, radio on and just seeing what the lights are showing kinda makes it peaceful. Thanks for sharing...John

Not much that's "warm and fuzzy" in the life of a BTO anymore, I guess. Wonder how many of them long for the good ol' days when everything would come to a screeching halt when mom and the kids brought out lunch for the crew, complete with cold lemonade, and everyone sat together on the shady side of the combine to eat?

Nice job on the poem, too. I think I'd rather be a lessor than a lessee these days, especially with prices going in the tank.

I agree with JD John. Makes it easier when all you see is what the lights let you see.
Great Pictures Sweetfeet.

Thanks.

Never harvested or plowed all night... but I suppose it's something like when I get lost in the far corners of a junkyard and can't see or hear another person - just the the rust, birds and sunshine.

Right - those guys last night...I'm positive it's "just a job". That land is run by a big outfit that's based 40-some miles from here.

They were running two huge all-trac combines all through the night. When I got up this morning, they were still running.

Thanks.

I know my husband said he always liked plowing late at night - just him and the stars... no heat in the cab either.
