on my Ferguson to 30 the dip stick behind the seat that looks like it would be for the pto shows to be low what kind of fluid should be added and should it be added at the gear shift were there is a big bolt thanks

There may be some knowledgeable guys here, however you can surly get Feggie info over on the Ferguson forum. just scroll down to 'Harry Ferguson' ;-)

The dipstick in the round cover below the seat is for the transmission/hydraulics/differential. All area connected, sharing the same oil. Lots of opinions what oil to use. Originally 90 weight mineral oil was recommended. That works fine in warm weather, but when it's cold the hydraulics go into slow motion. Most people prefer to use 15w40 motor oil, or universal tractor oil.

The oil does go into the large plug beside the shifter. You'll want to add oil slowly, the passages are small between the transmission and the hydraulic sump. Adding too much too fast may dump oil out the front seal into the clutch.

But, before adding oil, might want to pull the drain plugs and see if there is water in the case. Most likely there will be, especially if it's stored outside. It gets in around the shifter boots and condensation. Now might be a good time to change it, it holds about 8 gallons.

(quoted from post at 07:20:27 11/21/14) Tractorfluid,or Transhydraulic Fluid only,Never 80-90 I don't know where he heard that.Ron

He heard that straight from the Ferguson manual. All TO-20's,TO-30's,most TO-35's,Ford 9N's and 8N's used 90 weight GL1 mineral oil. It's available from Napa in 5 gallon buckets or at TSC in two gallon jugs labeled Ford tractor mineral oil.

(quoted from post at 12:20:42 11/21/14) This comes up fairly often on the N Board.
I don't think the GL1 mineral oil is at all like 80W90 gear oil.

Your right its not. I would say it's about like a 30 weight engine oil as far as viscosity.

Any good transhydraulic ("Tractor Fluid")oil will do and it takes 24 quarts(6 US gallons). Go to the Ferguson forum archives and look at Jeff(OH)"s procedure for cleaning the sumps. It would be a good idea to do that before a refill. At the very least, drain the water out of the sump bottoms.
