How about another fuel question

Some of you may remember I posted about my wife inheriting this Case 1690 tractor about a month ago. I have a diesel truck but this is the first diesel tractor I have owned. I don’t farm so this tractor is being used maintain our half mile gravel road and light chores of moving stuff around with the loader. I know it’s a over kill for the jobs that I have for it. Now to my question. I do not trust the fuel gauge. It has a 38 gal. fuel tank. I use it about 2 to 3 hours a month with just light work. Should I fill it up and keep it topped off with some anti gel stuff in it? Or would I be better off to just keep the fuel level low and pour 5 gal in of red fuel when I need to use it. Didn’t know if the fuel might get old with a full tank putting so few hours on it. Sorry this is not an ethanol question but it’s the only fuel question I could come up with.

i would keep the tank full to keep condensation out. also run an anti gel additive like power service or howes, and an anti bacterial because it sits so much.

keep it full, add power service and if you have a fuel tank drain drain off the water before each use from condensation

I have also used diesel fuel that was so old it probably came over on the Mayflower with no problems. However, keeping the tank full with a conditioner certainly isn't going to hurt anything and would be my course of action. This opinion is probably worth just what you paid for it, too.................................(smile)

Sounds about like me. I have a diesel tractor that gets really low use and I keep it mostly full ? and I add power service additive ,anti bacteria additive and throw in some marvel mystery oil for lube.
Does stabil make a diesel additive ? or is regular stabil good for diesel ? if so I may of put some of that in too.

Sta-bil makes a green colored stuff for diesels, but I think the red stuff might help, if you can't get the green.

I'd have to read the label. I don't have a bottle here close by. Maybe the red says NOT FOR DIESEL I think it may. I know the marvel mystery oil does have recommendations for diesel.

Dumb question:
On a tractor that needs to start in very cold weather, but does not run for many hours and is almost never needed at full power, say it uses less than a tank of fuel per year. Would it hurt anything to run it on #1 diesel fuel year around instead of #2? Fuel economy and maximum power would both drop a little because of less energy per gallon of fuel, but there should be less problems with fuel gelling in winter.

I agree with keeping the tank full is best and an anti-bacterial would still be needed. Anti-gel additive shouldn't be needed once the tank is mostly #1 diesel and the tank is always topped off with #1.

If you live in an area with wide temp swings you are going to get condensation. That means about any place in the world. The less airspace the less condensation. So yea what they said, keep it full. If you KNOW that your fuel source and tank are free from algae then no worries. But if there is the slightest chance of algae then put something in the tank along with anti gel unless as stated you run #1 year round. Right now mine is #2 as the last time I filled it, it was still warm. But lack of rain/soil conditions made me decide to wait for tillage till spring. So right now it's about full of #2. As I burn it off blowing snow and feeding bales it will get #1. Then I won't have to add anti gel.

I was in NAPA the other day, looking for a diesel fuel Anti-Bacterial additive and NON listed being "Anti-Bacterial"..

Which do YOU suggest..?

Ron.
