heard on the local news that is was 66 years a go last night when the blizzard of 48 struck this area. 30 inches of snow with high wind.

Dad was nine years old at the time. he told me the township had a TD-9 crawler with a V-plow. it got stuck near the drive of grandpa's farm. The neighbors pulled it out with two JD A's(one was grandpa's) one Farmall M and a war time JD G on steel.

I don't know how they hooked the tractors to the front of the plow. They had to pull the TD9 through most of the snow drifts. They put the G in the front. The steel wheels make a track for the rubber tired tractors to follow. Later one track came off the TD9. Dad said they worked on the track for two days.

It may have been ND as I lived there at the time and there were some major storms a few of those winters.

Ask an old timer from Nebraska about it...they were hit real hard, the Army had to rescue thousands of people and air lifted hay to the cattle. The storms hit the NE and mid-atlantic hard too from Christmas 1948 way into 1949. I was just 5 months old in Texas
where they say it was record cold and snowy but nothing like up north.

it was in Nebraska. grandpa's farm was north of Long island kansas one mile on the nebraska side of the state line.

Dad said they did not go to school or town for three weeks.

I was a freshman in high school at the time.

One or more C-47's were dumping hay bales to cattle in the Nebraska Sandhills. If I remember right, one rancher who was standing with his cattle was hit with a bale and killed.

1948 ! I don't remember any big snow storm, in Michigan but we had an 'earthquake', that woke us up one night. I was 6.

We lived in the SE corner of the Nebr panhandle. I was 5 years old. I thought the storm was right at new years. 48-49. I remember Dad climbing out of the house and walking to the barn to milk and climbing down into the barn. We called it the 49 blizzard. Or were there two?
