Liquid tune-up

How often do you use an additive to clean injectors and remove carbon buildup in your diesel engines - or is it even necessary? I burn a bio-diesel mix with either Howes or Power Service at each fill-up but wondering about something to clean the injectors, etc.

I used Sea Foam in my 2 cycle ob and PS in my storage tanks and fuel tank. Different one for each application. I just don't have fuel problems with either.

i use Power service in my GMC diesel. Ill use it when i have a car to haul somewhere where ill be running 3 or 4 tanks out on the same haul. Ive always had good service out of the Power Service and actually i can get better fuel mileage when im running it. Just remember to change your fuel filters.I change mine every 7000 miles and no problems so far..

I'm with Dean - never use the stuff. Price is high in most stores, but I notice that the dollar stores have injector cleaner on the shelf.

I run the Power Service additive (silver bottle) in my service truck, and everything else I own, or use, that's diesel powered. That said, if I'm not mistaken, the power Service additive is designed to help clean the injectors, along with the cetane boost. Beyond that, as long as your running the engine at more than an idle, and with enough load to keep it at operating temperature, you shouldn't have much carbon buildup, if any at all, to contend with.

I don't believe in snake oil and neither does my son, but an additive did help with sticking injectors in the Cummins ISM in his truck. This ISM was made somewhere in the first six months after the engine was introduced. It would sometimes idle a little rough and a mechanic told him those electronic injectors need a little additive to keep them clean. I forget what he used but it did smooth out the idle and occasional shake under load when an injector would hang up for a little while. He watches every nickel he spends and buying the additive did add to the expense of operation in a truck that didn't get very good mileage in the first place. He does not use additive in his 1994 Cat engine with a mechanical fuel system and it does just fine. I have never used additive in my older diesels. I had the rotary Bosch pump in the 1086 rebuilt at somewhere in the 6000 hour range and now the tractor has a touch under 17000 hours without touching the pump again. It starts great down to maybe 15 degrees so the pump must still be reasonably good. I do run bio in the summer but not in the winter. Jim

Nope don't ya know there is no reason to ever ever and an additive after all the fuel companies would never sell fuel that isn't perfect for every machine ever made and keeps the injectors perfectly clean and provides all the lubrication for your injection pumps fuel companies would never cheap out on the lube they are supposed to be putting in would they heck no. I'm going to go eat some roundup drenched wheat bread now and then I'm goina wash it down with a steak from an abused neglected cow with a side of a gmo potato .

I have been using Power Service in my many diesels for 3 and 7/8 decades. I don't use it to clean injectors or to get more power, or make the combustion chamber cleaner. I use it as wax prevention in cold weather. One of my drivers admitted to skipping it for five fuelings when his truck waxed up on him. dead truck at ten degrees is no fun.

I've been using the Power Service (white bottle) or Howes in my 3 diesel tractors and Bobcat for years.Just never really ran anything through to clean up the injectors, etc. didn't know if it was necessary or it just was a placebo type thing to do. I'll try some of the silver bottle along with the white as I noticed the silver doesn't prevent gelling. I admit to maybe not running the Bobcat at high rpms running the tree saw and loading logs - usually around 1600 rpm.
Speaking of the Bobcat - I really do appreciate the tip you gave me a few months ago about connecting the flat faced couplers together on unused attachments. I still don't see how they pressurize themselves, but, all I know is your advise really worked - thanks again!
