Ford 601 temp gauge(sending unit)

I am replacing all the gauges on my workmaster tractor. Everything was smooth until I pulled the old temp sending unit. Tight fit around the block, cannot get the new sending unit screwed in far enough to seal. Nut tightens down, sending cable still loose, antifreeze leaks. Discovered a brass or copper sleeve in the hole in the block, but not after ruining the sleeve that came with the new gauge. Anyone else have trouble with this, and are the original equipment gauges not around anymore, they had a steel nut. New one has brass nut, which is hard to tighten without rounding the hex nut. Thanks in advance.

Don't feel too bad Old Rocks, you are far from the first who has fallen into this dilemma. It has come up here a few times before. The brass bushing will tighten in but only with great care. The two problems as you know are the rust on the threads which needs to be cleaned out and take time, and the somewhat recessed location which makes it hard to get a wrench on it. I haven't needed to open up a lock washer for a spacer but that may be a good idea. The main need is for patience.

Thanks for the responses. I will try the lock washer and have located a 5/8-18 flare male to a 1/2 inch female pipe thread adapter I may try first. New gauge came with an adapter to 1/2 inch pipe thread? I will keep you posted, my tractor is about 90 miles from home, so I can only get to it on weekends. I am bound and determined to get a temp gauge working without losing anti-freeze.
