Lesson Learned.

A few month ago I had to replace an O-ring in Farmall C lift box. Only oil I had was Extreme hyd-tranny oil. It said good for case-IH. Good until the temps dropped. Then pump started talking very loud. Today, I picked up 2 gallons of Rural King's Harvest oil. It said for case-IH and low temps. Well pump stopped talking.

So lesson I learned, if you are going to use the cheap stuff, make sure it says for low temps.

No problem if you live where temps don't get as cold as central Indiana, about -20 coldest last winter. So far, we've been in the 20's. That was cold enough for the extreme to get too thick.

I started a 706 for the first time yesterday since it got cold, something was making what sounded like a buzzing sound but I think I determined it was coming from where the hydraulic pump is. I wonder what hydraulic oil is in it, maybe time to drain and replace it.

I have seen too many hydraulic systems ruined by cheap/wrong oil in them. I now usually only use a good quality hydraulic oil in anything I own or work on.

Some older simple systems like an old JD two banger or a IH "M" do not need anything real fancy but just about everything else should have good oil in it.

I have told several customers over the years that if they put some "cheap" hydraulic oil in something I repaired then there would be ZERO warranty on any thing I did to it.

Yea, I was thinking what kind of quality oil was out there in 1950? I put what was recommended from Case-IH for tranny, then replaced with 90/140 gear lube. The newer oils are IMO way too thin. I had tons of gear noise in tranny. Not to mention oil leaks. Had same problem with Jubilee. I put in the recommended oil from Case new Holland. Then on a hot summer day, it was coming out the tranny's input shaft in a steady stream. Instead of splitting tractor and replacing seal, it was easier to return it to 90/140 gear lube.

How hard can it be to rebuild hyd pump that looks like it's out in the open? Good chance it's never been rebuilt. Really isn't used much, only use it lift mower deck. The pump was talking and not doing any lifting with the extreme oil.

Most modern hydraulic oil is around 10W. That can be too thin for some older tractors. I have found ,on many old tractors that started out with 80-90 gear oil, that straight 30W non-detergent oil seems to work pretty well year round. It is getting harder to find it though.

I had a load of beans left on the old 58 gmc. I took it to the elevator yesterday and then waited ever so patiently while the lift slooooooowly went up. That leaks anyway, so I guess it is time to pull it and put new seals in it and some appropriate lube. I've added over the years, but God only knows what is in the bottom half of that reservoir. This weather separates the men from the boys, that's for sure.

I was traveling the back roads in Southern Ky. several years ago and came upon a man with a Farmall M pulling a wheel disc. He was off the road trying to get the disc to lift. Pull the lever and whine and raise a little bit. I asked him what oil he had in the belly pump and he said a dealer told him to put hydraulic oil in it. I asked him if I looked trust worthy and he said yes so I told him to go back to the gas station and see if they had straight 30 wt. Get 6 quarts. I helped him change oil and she raised right up and stayed there. He told me I was the smartest guy he had ever met. Ellis

Filter, what filter on my old 1950 C? My Jubilee doesn't have one either. So when did they start putting filters on tractor hyd?

The oil I put in my Hyd wasn't there but a few hours and it looked dirty when I drained it. I think I last changed it about 5 years ago with the oil Case-Ih recommended at the time.

Filter were needed back then too.

george on the left side of the tractor there will be 4 bolts and there is a fine screen behind the plate . hopefully the pics will explain.

I am in the process of cleaning up and painting a Farmall M. The hydraulic oil needs replaced. What do you folks reccomend?

that is why I only use CNH Hy-Tran, works anytime and is cheap compared to repairs,, like the guy in the old Pens oil commercial used to say "you can pay me now or pay me later" not that I used that oil but the saying is still true
cnt

yes. your C has a strainer not a filter. It is on the left side of the touch control box below the fill plug. be careful when removing it so you don't tear the seam. If I remember correctly they are not cheap.

You are right about not being cheap. I found it,
have to remove stearing column to remove it. The
pic I saw looks like it may be threaded to
something inside.

George, there is a tapped hole on some Touch-Control strainers that is used as a temp gage port.

I know my SA pump 'talks' when cold, but it quiets fairly quick. I can't remember what oil I put in it - before it was rebuilt, it went through it too fast to use anything expensive. Now that it's tested and tight, I'll have to go for the good stuff.

IH bug,
Many thanks. If my pump starts making noise again, I will remove screen. My tractor is only used to mow and right now there is snow on the ground. I had to move it to a new location in pole barn when it started talking. We were to get into the single digits last night and I'm going to move it again this morning. Hope pump doesn't complain.
