the 750 mf combine is smoking bad ,, no power , and I don't hear the turbo whisling like it should ,put in All new fuel filters ,new air filter too ,, no difference ,,. could be the fuel injector pump?? motor wont start unless it gets a whif of ether ,, until today the perkins 354...,, would spring to life no matter how cold it was ,,never had a problem with turbo chargers , got this one on the perkins and one on my 95 dodge cummins ...Could anyone describe how to tell when one is bad??

I usually remove the air hose that comes from the turbo to the intake. Reach in and check the end play and see if the wheel is rubbing the housing, also look for oil. Not hard to tell and you can just crank the engine and see if it is spinning.

I lost one on a Mack. Lots of smoke and no power, exhaust temp went through the roof too.

What you are describing sounds just like what happened when the turbo went out on my 2-105 last spring (lots of smoke and big loss in power).

What color is the smoke, and does it only smoke under load or idle and start up too? I don't really see a turbo problem causing the starting problem and the need for ether but it is possible depending on the type of failure.

don't smoke real bad at idle , , black smoke ,under load,it lugs so bad seems like the brAkes are holding it back .not the case though...,just hardly has power to pull thresher and pull hills in field , idled throttle back tonite ,, motor stalled , with nearly clear thresher ,, really doubt motor is worn out , all at once .. will go down moderate slope well in good beans like normal , wondering if injector pump return line being plugged ,, had that problem on 4020 deere ,,. sure ran terrible ..bad idle and similar ether starting needed ?? hummn/?

Not familiar with the engine turbo setup but if its easy I'd pull the intake tube off the turbo and like others said turn the shaft with fingers and also wiggle side to side and see if the compressor wheel contacts the housing. If it seems ok then start it up and see if it spins.

I guess if the turbo is locked up and/or exhaust turbine is damaged then maybe the engine is not breathing good enough through exhaust to start easily without the need for ether.

If you are making black smoke either the turbo should be singing and making a lot of boost or its not working much at all. Also check turbo plumbing to intake but if it was disconnected the whistle and air noise should be obvious.

Shaft wiggle or movement doesn't really mean anything. I had to replace the one on my semi after a million miles. The shaft was tight and spun freely. Just wore out. If it has an air to air on it check it for leakage.
Just plug one end off and then with a regulator apply about 30PSI MAX to the air to air if it holds for like a minute or so it is good. You can make the plugs out of PVC caps and a hose clamp. Drill one cap for a pressure gauge, and tire valve. Then you can monitor the pressure as you pressurize it. This will also tell if there are boots leaking as it won't build pressure.

You can check the turbo by removing the intake hose and visually checking the compressor wheel for side play and see how difficult it is to turn. I would say if it's not leaking oil, is not contacting the housing and turns freely then the turbo is probably fine.
Keep in mind that if the engine does not fuel up then it will not make boost either. I'm not really familiar with the 354... but check and see if it has a waste gate on the turbo. If that's stuck open it will dump whatever boost it has. I don't think there is one on that turbo... but check...
What is really concerning to me is that the engine won't start without a shot of blow... with either a bad turbo or a governor coming apart it should probably still start and idle. You may find you have internal problems like a blown head gasket between a couple of cylinders. Just start with the simple stuff and work your way inwards... or keep good insurance on it.
