premium hydraulic fluid on MF175?

My local Massey Ferguson dealer is telling me absolutely do not put any hydraulic fluid in my tractor, except for their premium brand.

Of course, it's expensive.

They claim lesser quality will clog filters and create an explosion. Well, maybe not an explosion, but something really bad I guess.

Can anyone confirm or deny this claim? Is the Massey Ferguson 175 that fragile that it needs a premium hydraulic fluid??

The word premium denotes that the item in question is more
expensive, but nothing else in particular. If the container says
anything about what specs it meets or its formulation that might be
interesting to find out and see how it compares with other fluids. I
would not worry about it, sounds to me like they are just trolling for
suckers.

I've tried TSC hyd oil in my JD's and the wet brakes came apart, so I use JD hyguard only. And since I share implements between all my tractors I use Hyguard in all of them. Including MF 265, 175, 85, Farmall M and all my JDs. Nothing gone wrong since.

If not for the JDs I'd use TSC oil

My local Massey dealer told me this, if your tractor has wet brakes do not use the cheaper stuff in it because it can cause problems with the brakes. He said you could use the cheaper stuff if it still has the dry brakes. I have the cheaper stuff in my 175 but I probably won't use it again. What I bought says it meets Massey Ferguson M1129A specs, but this stuff foams real bad. I won't use it again.

Joe I can assure you hundreds of farmers with 175 MF are not running MF hydraulic in them. As long as the oil meets ALL MF specs for your 175 it is ok to use it.

I paid $75 for a 5 gallon bucket of JD all weather low viscosity hydro fluid.
I think that you will have to pay at least $80 or so. If it says, MF on the bucket then oh well. Quality fluid costs money, I do not buy TSC hydro oil.

he's just brand loyal I got a MF 255 same drivetrain and hyd system as yours that has had napa premium universal fluid in it close to 30 years no problems it has wet brakes they never been replaced and have never squealed and chattered, as for the jd that's the nature of the beast brake linings wear out then start crumbling particles that stop up the hyd filter seen it happen to several jd tractors nothing wrong with them just a problem they have

How much oil are you ever going to put in the
tractor? Even if you change it every year, and it
holds 10 gallons. Cheap oil is $60, expensive stuff
is $85. On 10 gallons, that's $50 a year. Is $50
worth some peace of mind? Realistically, you'll
change it every 5 years, so it'll cost you $10/year.
It's just such a stupid thing to cheap out on.
