Surprise gift of a tractor.

Back in the early 90s just out of the blue one day my father in law told me he wanted me to have his tractor. We never spoke of it again for many years. He is up in his 80s now and in the last year he has had a few small miss haps with his tractor. Run it under a tree and bent up the exhuast and made a sharp turn and run the bush hog over his water tank. Lol. I think he decided it was time for him to quit useing it. His son farms with him now and out of the blue he showed up with this at the house yesterday. You could have knocked me over. My big tractor is a farmall H and I was on my cub when he pulled in so you can guess how big this looked to me. He is the most unselfish man I have ever known. We spent a little time talking about the tractor but spent an hour showing me all the tools in the tool box and giving me the history on them. His 1st screw driver he ever bought was in there. I think in his eyes the tools where the more important gift. I told him it would not be my tractor but should be my wifes " his daughter" that tickeled him. I am sure I will have lots of questions for the guys on the Case board cause this is a little more complex than my H. He did all the service on it and put on a new rear tire befor he brought it to us. They dont make many like him any more. life is good.

Paul S.,
Great story... what a guy your FIL is!

And you making it your wife's tractor - pretty cool.

Thats really awesome, There no doubt he thinks your a good man and a good husband to his daughter. What a great gift from a greater man. You should be proud not only for having a kind generous man for a father -in-law but proud of yourself also for being the type of man he would consider giving a gift as great as his own tractor too.

Well he obviously thinks highly of you and it is easy to see why. Just the fact that you understand about the tools says a lot to me. There is a core group of tools we all have that are like a part of us. We reach for them automatically to help us with our daily work. They become a part of us. I remember my FIL had a toolbox of his old tools that was stolen from his car. I remember how hurt he was by it. Take good care of his things. Keep his tools separate and in their place where he had them. I have two sets like that...my Dad's and my FIL's. To this day I only "borrow" them and they always go back in the correct box.

Congrats. First little fact...It isn't a Case, it is a David Brown.

First thing you should do service wise to it, install an oil pressure gauge if someone hasn't already. Keep an eye on it.

You have a GOOD Father in law.

Four months ago my son in law told me that I was CHICKEN $HIT when I wouldnt drive a few miles from big city hospital to their Big city home{I am not big city driver} My wife was in the hospital at that time ,had under went 3 heart by passes and new valve. Daughter told me that he was just jokeing!

I will never forget this.

It looks like it is a 1590? I had a case 1490. Actually built by David Brown after Case bought them out. I also had a DB Case 885 before the 1490 it had the rounded dash. The only problem I ever had with the 1490 was a leak in the fuel tank, and a worn out PTO clutch release bearing. Be sure to clean that PTO clutch cable periodically. Your tractor originally had a full cab. you could get the rubber strips for the glass from CNH, then buy the safety glass from your local glass company. They have glass dimensions in the shop manual. You can get the foam interior covering from a number of sources.

1690s are DB, everything but the stickers, built in the DB factory in Meltham. The 1190-1690 sold in the rest of the world still had DB stickers.
