Darn fool question

How does one tell, when looking at an older running gear, what is it's original weight capacity? I've got a Schwartz gear I want to use to haul water for the sprayer.

other factors in running gears is thickness of axle beam material as well as the height of the axle beam (top to bottom of beam). The farther out from the contact with the box frame, or rails, the weaker it will be due to bending moment applied to the point of contact. The stiffness of the telescopic pipes (usual) also prevent axle deflection if the wheel hits an obstruction and is pushed rearward. The best information comes from the manufacturer (if known, and still exists) A safe way to prevent a wreck is to creep up on a reasonable load and stop before it seems iffy. Jim

Number of wheel bolts would be some indicator too. A five bolt wheel will mean a pretty light gear, five to six ton at most. Even then,I would never put that much weight on one.

I was just out there. It has a 6 bolt pattern. I am looking to put a 1000 gallon tank on it and a small transfer pump. So around 5 tons if I fill it up and not including the top. I can easily creep up on the load by filing it to various levels and seeing how it handles it.

If that is pretty uniform for all manufacturers then I should be all set with 10K lbs of water and a small pump. I'm making the deck fairly small.

I'd really like to see that in a offcial specification sheet. I'd seen 8 lug, 3 inch axles limited out at 6 tons. Putting 24K on most farm wagons would be "interesting". And I'd want some brakes to tow a rig like that...

I have an assortment of 6, 8, and 10 ton gears here, all are 6 bolt...

That said, the 6 ton gear made me nervous at much above 4 tons, so I made a header cart out of it.

If you go to shoups website and look at wheel parts you will find the different sizes and capacity for each spindle. the bearings will tell you which one you would be likely to have then use that rating for each spindle. Not perfect but close enough for government work.

Dont work. The John Deere 053 gear is 6 lug and rated at 4 ton. Yetter was rated at 6 ton and 5 lugs.

Most 5 lugs are on 2000 to 3000 lb axles
6 lugs are on 5000 to 7000 lbs axles??
8 lugs are 9000 lbs up.??
