Best tractor

I am looking at a 986 IHC, 2-105 white, 4-85 white or a 1070 case. All about the same money. I run a grazing operation with a round baler and a 9 foot discbine. I have a 886 which will lug down in heavy hay on the discbine. Any advice, warnings etc. Thanks

4-85 White? Misprint or a 2-85 FWA?
The 2-105 and 2-85 are basically the same tractor except for the 105 having a turbo. If it was me I'd have to take a White, but that's just my bias. I'd take the 3 speed Over/Under in a White over an IH TA any day of the week.

I agree with Randy. The 2-105 if it is a clean tractor. Make sure the Over/Under is responsive. The 1070 would also be a solid tractor. Make sure the power shift (if it is) is tight. Any of the 3 larger tractors would probably work fine depending on which one is in the best condition. Good luck - Bob

Have to go with Randy on this one. Am biased also but the 105 is a nicer handling tractor than the 1070. The 3 speed in the White is a pretty reliable and nice shifting unit. I will say that the couple of times I've driven a 1070, I kinda liked the tractor, other than the funky shifting. Don't know if it is a characteristic of the 1070 or the shifters were worn badly, but I didn't care much for the shifting. I'll second randy's opinion of the TA verses the over/under.

I look at old tractors from a parts perspective, The more tractors built, and the longer the build run, the easier time you will have finding parts. While I like Case tractors, that funky power shift is a big turn off, and getting parts,or finding someone who knows how to repair the power shift could be a issue. Remember a 1070 is a over 40 year old tractor. White tractors where I believe to also be a very good tractor, but the parent company is gone so far back into the dust of time , Agco would like to forget that they ever existed. IH built thousands of 966/986 1066/1086 tractors, and the TA goes all the way back into the late 1950's and was still available right up till the big CaseIH merger in 1987. So to me the IH 986 would be my pick. A 986 is the same tractor as a 1086, only the 1086 has a turbo, while the 986 is naturally aspirated. Bruce

I have to agree with Bruce here. I'll add in that dealer support in your area will be important too. Here, in my area AGCO support is terrible while CaseIH and Deer is good.

I'll throw in a vote for the 986. I own a 1086 myself, tough old tractor. Haven't had any parts availability problems.

You could add to the mix the Ford 9700 many built and most still working, plenty of power yet still fairly nimble. Known to be very good on fuel and the dual power is very durable.

The CASE power shift is a great unit. Easy to run, just pick a range then use the three speed shifter and go up and down as needed, nothing simpler to run.

Since you already have an 886,go with the 986!Keep things the 'same'.Wts,hydralics, hitch dimentions. Not to mention the controls will be the same. You cant beat that 436 engine. For me,it be no contest. 986 it is.

2-105 white gets my vote
the 6-354 turbo Perkins has plenty of power for the mower. Nimble and handles well also.
Great pulling tractor as well.
I may be biased though haven't run any of the others

well if you have to the 986. Otherwise I would opt for a 66 series much simpler to work on and no electronic dash. The 1086 had the 414 with turbo.

Ran a 1070 with a Vermeer 605C for many a bale. GREAT combination. All the hand movements were inline and the powershift that had reverse was ideal for that baler (you had to back up about 10 feet for every bale). That said if your baler requires a reverse for every cycle, don't walk but run away from the 986. I rented one once when our 1070 was down and hated it to death on the baler.

Not familiar with White so can't offer a opinion there.

It comes down to the 105 or the 986. Which one is in better shape for the money? Around my part of the country, a wore out 986 will bring more $$$$ than a 105 in decent shape. I'd take a 105 White all day over that 9. I think after you run that over/under 3 speed for a while, that 886 of yours will lose its gleam....

A 1070 power shift in good condition would be nice on a round baler (rated 108 HP?). You might want to post this question on the Case Discussion board to find out how long you can leave the PS transmission in reverse with the PTO running. There may be a lubrication problem in that combination. There should be a decal next the the PTO lever warning not to leave the transmission in reverse with the PTO running (i.e. rear mounted snow blower). I'd try to shift the transmission back into a forward gear as soon as possible after backing up with a baler. Other than that I think a 1070 would be a good fit.

Yep and can be nothing more ignorant and expensive to fix the day it don't run if your the unlucky one L.O.L.
My buddy bales with an 1175 with standard trans as a Proper power shift fix round here is worth twice what the tractors make in sales.
You buy it run it till it pukes, send it to china and go buy another one in this area.
