Airwaves are covered in political ads.

99% saying...So&So is a no-good, lowdown, lying, cheating, theiving, coniving, insider, outsider,
party hack, inexperienced know nothing, polecat, skunk, millionaire, bum......so vote for me.

Sure would be nice to hear some ideas and commitments from candidates that say
"here is how I think we can fix this problem (with specifics), and that is what I will try to do if elected".

No ideas around here...just lots of mud-slinging.

How about where you are?

It's the same here. It's the last week before closing time and the candidates all have a lot of TV money left to burn. This week is about influencing the few people who have not decided yet.

Agreed. But I also dislike those that say they'll solve a complex problem with simple fixes, most of which they can't do anyway: "I'll cure unemployment in the city by giving tax credits to companies that move here". Also, I'd prefer some honesty: "Look, I don't have all the answers but this is my philosophy...." and don't try and please everybody just to get their vote.

Yep, SOS different day.
I agree, they would get further trying to get a solution, rather than name calling.

Thats funny you say that, I was talking just late night with my friends and told them the same thing,I want to hear what you gonna do to fix something i dont want to hear your opponent is a scumbag. We already know both of you are we just need to figure out which scumbag we want to vote for.

I'm with you jml. If it could be fixed, it would
have been long time ago and shame on you for knowing
how to fix it and not having contacted your rep long
ago.

Lots of radio and print ads here, saying the same stuff. Don't know about tv, as I haven't watched since they went to the digital signal. Don't miss it. Change stations or turn the radio off when the ads come on, too.
I too have recently heard people asking why the candidates won't talk about their ideas, rather than just mud slinging.

Same here. I pinned down one of our local polititions and asked " how are you going to fix it"? He wouldn't answer the question. I responded that if you don't know just say so. He didn't like that and the conversation was over.

I'm afraid the voting takers are starting to out number the voting makers. Takers just want free stuff and vote for those that say they will give it to them. None of that crowd cares how it gets pd for or if it's sustainable.

It used to be "I will, I did, I am" etc. until campaign laws allowed negative ads. Now that's about all you get and it isn't likely to change because IT WORKS. And most voters don't consider what's best for the town, state or country. Only what's better for ME.

You also used to be able to get some sort of an idea of what they believe in by what party they were with.
All the Ads I see now there is no mention what ever of what party they align with, any party at all.

Thats what I never understood, how could you possibly make more ground with voters by BAD MOUTHING your opponent, rather than winning them over to you....

We have a kid running for Idaho Senate (I think..) He is like 19 or 20!!!! AWESOME guy! Great campaign, lots of good ideas, and so on...

Sad to see that is what the world has turned into!!

The reason they don't get into specifics is because...

SPECIFICS ARE OVER MOST PEOPLE'S HEADS

People respond to emotion, not facts.

If they're not slinging mud at the other guy, they're making vague, sweeping promises designed to elicit emotional responses. Such as, "I will make government smaller," or...

One challenger for a legislative seat is making promises that he will close the border to prevent the spread of Ebola. Whoever came up with that is an idiot. It's going to be close to THREE MONTHS before this guy takes office, if elected. In three months, either the ebola epidemic will have run its course, or we'll all be infected. Closing the border at that point will be TOO LATE.

The big problem today is deciding who the least offensive person is to vote for. No longer do we find ourselves trying to vote in a good person.

The specifics are over the heads of the people running too.

Ask any politican about the external_linkcare - most don't have clue one about the monstocity they passed. I'm still waiting to hear how I as an employer is supposed to report who is on our insurance - who isn't and the available rates and wages we pay (all required). 4 years later they still don't have the forms finalized and are still making up the rules.

A large vote for anyone not associated with the major political parties will make them put up some more intelligent candidates the next time.

Don't be afraid to write in a name on the ballot; that will show you displeasure with the current candidates on the ballot.

JML755, I agree that oversimplification is a problem, but most don't even state a governing philosophy.
The philosphy of most seems to be "just do or say anything to get elected".

One incumbent politician here is "against big spending liberals in Washington" then in his next ad he brags about the billions of dollars in government spending he has personally brought to the state. I guess we are all too dumb to notice the contradiction.

Jeez, I'm afraid to reply for fear of being labeled either a abundant or a conservative. So I will simply say I agree with you 100%. I'm sick of all the political adds.

If you voted for a balanced budget,, then you voted to kill baby puppies and club baby seals... and hate veterans, closed libraries, and put all the farmers out of business, and caused global warming, closed thousands of schools, starved families, on and on and on...

At least that's what the ads are saying around here...

And lots of folks are believing that crap....

Hope I dont get this shut down...

The point of negative ads is to discourage people who might vote for the other guy. That's as good as a vote for your guy and is (unfortunately) more effective. People get fed up and stay home.

A few years ago, Minn nnalert and nnalert put up candidates for governor over the objection of main stream. Shove them down your throat type deal. The voters elected an independent. That didn't work well either. Back to same old thing again now.

The candidates are all volunteers, nobody is forced to be on the ballot. How do you "make" the parties run better candidates when people choose to run for office. The parties are stuck with whoever wins their primary.

Negative TV ads, and especially all the crap on the internet keeps a lot of good people from running.

My ideal candidate would do absolutely nothing except vote to repeal about 99% of the laws enacted in the last 50 years, gridlock is good. Why does anyone believe that governemnt is competent to do anything?

With the US being 18 Trillion$ in debt a 1 trillion$ deficit in yearly spending and 10,000 folks a day retiring and going on Social Security there are no easy fixes or even bad fixes there is only terrible and worse periods of time we'll all have to endure to get things back on quilter. Its not a problem with a happy ending and any politician that tells the truth about the situation will never get elected to anything people just do not want to face up to the situation.

In my state most of the incumbents need to do negative ads because if they stand on their record they look terrible. But we have so many people dependent of gov't for their paycheck that the gov't is always going to be big. There isn't a bit of difference between D and R at the state level anymore.

Don't forget the trillions we spend on our military trying to "Police" the rest of the world.

The adds around here are such mis-representations of the facts that they amount to outright lies. There doesn't seem to be an effective way to counteract them.
