oliver 1850 plough

Just wanting some insight here. got an 1850 and grampa had a john deere f345 john deere 6 bottom hydralic reset plough in the weeds pull it ou and just wondering kif i can pull it or not?[/i]

In my soils that is a 4 bottom plow tractor. In light soil you may
pull 5, but I can't ever see an 1850 handling a 6 with any
effectiveness.

Mine handles 4x18s alright. 5x14 or 16s when they were new was pretty much what they pulled, but remember, that tractor is far from new anymore.

If you are in heavy soil, 6 will be a load. But an 1850 2wd with the tires loaded is a 12,000-13,000 pound tractor. We had a gentleman who was using 5x16's in heavy loam with a 1650 2wd in 2nd gear on level ground at a normal 8-10 inch depth. We pulled 5x16's in light soil with a 1650 4wd as a matter of course in 3rd gear. If you don't have a lot of steep hills and have the tractor weighed properly, an 1850 should do alright. 1850's were rated as a 5-6 plow tractor, by the way. If you are going to plow 10-12 inches deep in heavy soil you will need wheel weights. Also keep in mind that a JD plow has a bit heavier draft than an Oliver plow. I'm assuming we are talking 2wd. If you have a 4wd, you will have plenty of traction to pull a 6 bottom. I am also assuming you have 18.4x34 or 18.4x38 rear tires and the tires properly loaed. If you are running 16.9x34 and/or no fluid in the tires, then I doubt if the tractor will do very well. Make sure the plow is adjusted properly, too. The difference in draft on a properly adjusted plow and an improperly adjusted one is huge.

I'd be very interested to hear back how the tractor actually does handle the plow in your conditions. And give us specifics on how the tractor is weighted, tire size, gear used, etc.

Well if it's gas (310 cid) no way, if diesel (354 perkins) the max either make is 93 hp about same as a 4020 JD and none have turbo. JD is 404 cid. These are all 4-16 plow tractors ...5-14 in sandy loam and 6 btms in your dreams. Drop 2 off and tractor and you will be happy.

I have a couple 1850s amd we pulled 4x18s. The ground is heavy clay and we plowed 8 to 10 inches deep.
Unless the pump is turned up a lot and you have more weight added it would be a struggle. Msybe could do it in sandy losm. but I do not think you could go very deep.
As mentioned before about the tractor's age, probaby is not putting out rated horsepower.

It might pull it but it will be a maximum load.

Now-a-days you see 150HP tractors pulling six bottom plows. You will probably get just as much done pulling a four bottom plow in a higher gear. Less wheel slippage at a higher speed will improve your fuel efficiency. Most semi-mounted plows can drop a bottom or two.

ya i hear that to but i bought a IH smi mount 5-16s put it back of a 4430 made 2 rounds and went home and got my Deere smi mount and plowed the field sold the dam IH

Okay so I hooke the ol girl up and ploughed 25 acre with it toady it is sandy soil with some rolling hills and it did fine I was in 4 gear. It's a on land plough so I think that helped quite a bit not having to be down in the furrow. But tires are 18.4x36 loaded the motor was actually rebuilt about 10 years ago and it didn't get used for anything but pulling a trash trailer.
