How about Stump Grinders

There was an informational post about chippers, how about stump grinders? I have recently took down some red pine trees, about 18 of them. The stump cut down to about ground level, varies from about 16-24 diameter in inches. How big of a stump grinder should I be looking at for a 24 hour rental? Will a 26 HP Toro do the job($200)? I can get a smaller 20 HP for $130 but I don't want to be beat to death. My branches are all being burnt in a big fire pit. Kids love roasted hotdogs and smores... SMH

We built them at Morbark also. Our local rentals have them and another brand. I would get one that has remote control. You can stand anywhere and run it and you don't get chips thrown at you while operating like the ones with controls on machine. Some even have a little blade on front to push /level all the remains.Don't even bother with the "hand held" type. Those are for the guy with a hard to get area with one or two stumps. Those are pretty big stumps. Even a big one will take you a half hr or more each. They don't chip as fast as you think.

I'm too cheap to pay for someone to grind my stumps. I cover them with a pile of dirt, stump covers, plant flowers, in about 10-12 years stumps are gone. Happy termites do their thing.

Just rented one of the Toros today. 16" and less are a piece of cake. One 24" cottonwood took about an hr. Two almost 4' cottonwood stumps took 3 hrs. each, but they needed to be ground down almost 18 inches. Spent all day, but got rid of 15 stumps. Now I have probably 8 yds of mulch to haul away. Red pine would probably be faster, some of the stringy grain was giving me trouble, had to keep trying different sides till I found the right direction to cut from. Went through 15 gal of gas too.

I just hire a guy with a big trailer mounted diesel powered stump grinder. Wear your eye and ear protection and stand back a ways.

For how much he can get done in a short amount of time.....not a bad deal at all. It's really fun to watch too!

Very expensive and a maintainance issue. Hire someone or rent one. Very unpleasant to use too. Those little 5 hp engine ones are a joke.

My neighbor hired a man to take down a big pine tree about 24 inches in diameter. He used a chipper with remote control on the stump. It had a 4 cylinder
Wisconsin engine. It would have made a beaver smile. Hal
