I see aftermarket starters for sale that are priced pretty cheap has anyone bought one to use? I see most are guaranteed for 1 year.I'm looking at one for my Oliver 1650 diesel priced between $135 and
$214 for one with gear reduction.

I just installed a cheap aftermarket starter on my JD275 lawn tractor. Got it off ebay for $62, less than half price. It works just fine. Starts the 17 hp kawasaki engine just fine. No idea how long it will last. I guess I could buy two cheap starters and still be ahead. The OEM starter only lasted 14 years.

My experience with imported aftermarket starters demonstrates that corners are cut with wire size and insulation.

After noticing poor starting performance after installing one, I disassembled it for inspection. Though a 6V unit, it had brushes intended for a 12V starter as evidenced by the size of the leads.

You will be well served by rebuilding your OEM unit (or having it done).

There are aftermarket starters and then there are aftermarket starters.

I used to sell reman starters and alternators, among other things, for a private label auto parts company. The job paid the bills for a couple of years till I got a better offer.

There are companies that do it right and the product is equal to original, and there are companies that fix what's wrong with a unit and call it remanufactured.

I'd check out the company pretty well before I bought.

We've put them on multiple Olivers with Waukesha's and the change is incredible. Wouldn't give you a nickel for a rebuilt original compared to how much better the gear reduction starters make the Waukesha's start. The market is offering a better product, and at a price that is usually less than what a rebuild of the original costs.

I just installed a gear reduction starter on my 1650 diesel from Maple Springs Farm. I was not happy with the performance of my rebuilt original Delco starter. The new starter cranks the engine at much faster RPM''s making for almost instant starts.
should be much easier on the batteries in cold weather.

I bought one for a Case Backhoe. Seems like I paid a little over $100 and a new Case was close to $400??
I agree that you are much better advised to rebuild yours.
My starter drive could not be found, new or used.
After replacing, BH started good for a few times and then would just click! I tore the solenoid down and discovered it was made just like my original Case with internal parts about 1/2 size.
Best to let Communist China starter copies to be your last choice!

I bought two off the www (Ford 2000 and 3000) and both were reasonably priced and were new. No problems and that was over 5 years ago.
