Some pictures of the Ottumwa Harvest Day

A friend and I went to the get together at Ottumwa Saturday. We had went to the same gathering in 2010. The weather was perfect but there where few people there and not many participants either. It was kind of a let down.

Two corn pickers running, one guy with a JD 55 shelling corn, and two guys cutting soybeans.

They did about five minutes of threshing and maybe 15 minutes of corn shredding an corn shelling.

I am not complaining now. There was no charge and met some real nice people. Just seemed like there was not as much interest as just a few years ago.

Here are some pictures.

That brings back memories!

The 20 years my husband farmed, he always ear picked corn to fill two wooden cribs and one round metal one out back.

Both filling cribs in fall and shelling corn in summer kind of made a mess in the yard. (It's probably been 12 years since he farmed... I've lost track.)

I blame the low turnout on the weather. Our local plowday by Osceola was this weekend and the turnout was way lower than usual. Most guys were taking advantage of the beautiful weather to get their crops harvested.

JD we were fortunate to have any show at all. Thursday before was foggy with about a quarter mile visibility and Friday not much better. We were able to combine some beans Sunday afternoon.

Also did you notice how muddy it was! I pulled two pickers w/ wagons out of the mud Sunday. Pull type pickers would not have been able to run and stay on the row with a wagon behind. Combines in corn and beans were having a difficult time with the mud.

We did not bind any crop to thresh this year due to the rain in June and later. What was threshed I believe was last years crop.

Roger: I did not mean to criticize the show. I know the weather played a big part in how it went. We also got the 3+inch rains last week too. I think the real pretty day hurt as many stayed home to try to get crops in themselves.

It really surprised me on how little of the corn crop is harvested between Cedar Rapids and Ottumwa. IT is way behind the last few years for sure.

Where were you Sat. afternoon??? I looked for you and did not find anyone that seemed to know you.

Only "BIG" red tractor I saw there was a COOP and a W9 IH.

It was neat to watch the blacksmith guy teaching those kids how to make things.

The WR9 is mine. Are you from Cascade? Thought
someone said a guy was looking for a Roger. There
was at least three of us Roger's there. Sorry.

There were three generations working at the
blacksmith stand! It was nice to see.

We can try for next year.
