Loader Pump Hot!

I've been trying to get a wagner loader mounted on my 640 Ford and keep having problems. I put a new pump on it and it still wont work and the pump gets super hot. The place where the return line comes out of the frame I think is 1" but where it goes into the pump is alot bigger and I had to reduce it down. Could it be that the pump can't pull enough fluid into it? Thanks for your help and ideas.

Sounds more like you had a pump that is dead heading as in you have it plumb wrong so the pump sits under pressure all the time

Old is likely right, but we need to know more to help. You say it doesn't work, but more info is needed. What doesn't it do? any noises? do you have a pressure gauge? relief valve setting? Open center valve set? ??? Pics would help.

Did the system ever work? How did you match the new pump?

The pump needs to be the right volume to match the cylinder size, plumbing, and valves.

Also there are 2 types of pumps, positive displacement (gear pumps), and variable displacement (piston and vane pumps).

With positive pumps, you need open center valves.
With variable, you need closed center valves.

Mismatching either way will cause overheating.

No it's never worked since I bought it. It is a gear type pump. I bought it online I forget where now but it said it was for that application. It has the origional wagner control valves. I'll take some pictures and post tomorrow. When I pull back on the bucket control I can tell it puts more of a load on the motor and the line for that will jump. But other than that nothing.

I would check the pressure when unloaded, should be near 0, go up to maximum if lifting heavy load.

If you post some pictures of how you have it plumbed, and the make and model of the pump and the valve, I'll bet we can make some progress.

if I am reading correctly you reduced the line
size on the pump suction? if the pump is
cavitating it will put air into the system and
tear itself up and could also get hot but
everything else should work somewhat normally.
also will likely work fine at lower rpm.
check that you have the hoses hooked correctly it
sounds like you have a blockage/restriction in the
system.

Here's some pictures I took of the pump, the control and the plumbing. I sure hope one of guys can help me figure it out. The control has Wagner 30300 on it. The loader is a Wagner WF3.
