O/T I had to laugh.........

I was talking politics with our daughter, Amy, this afternoon.

A longtime acquaintance of mine, Mark, is running for State Senator in my district. His daughter, Jessica, is his campaign manager. Jessica and Amy have been good friends since school days.

This afternoon, Amy mentioned again that Mark was upset after the primary election last May because he got less than 100% of the nnalert vote even though he was the only nnalert candidate on the ballot.

His daughter, Jessica, told him, "Well, Dad, you just have to realize there are some people who just don't like you".

I'm under no illusions, myself. Even though I'm on the ballot unopposed for County Commissioner for my district, I'm sure there are some who won't vote for me even if I am the only one on the ballot. In fact, I could probably write a list right now.

It will be interesting.

We had an older fellow run for mayor years ago.
I think he got about 80 votes out of 1000. He threw a fit and claimed he was cheated because more than 80 people said they would vote for him.

There are quite a few unopposed candidates on our ballot who won't get my vote. I might cast a write-in vote for Dr. Jack Kevorkian in a couple of races, since a dead convicted murderer would be a better office holder than the actual candidates.

Kinda the same situation here four years ago. A longtime friend/acquaintance who grew up three miles away had been our State Representative until she was term limited out. She chose not to run for State Senate because her sister was moving away and she said she needed to be here to look after her mother. She paraded another term limited rep around the district like a prize calf, campaigning for him. He had opposition, but he won the nomination, but not by a lot. After getting the nomination,he was chosen to be the running mate of the guy running for governor,so he dropped out of the Senate race. Everybody thought the guy who ran against him in the primary should have the nomination.
Well, the local gal swept in and pulled a few shady tricks and took the nomination. She won in the general election and is our State Senator, but she did it without my vote. I voted Libertarian in protest. She's doing a good job,but I haven't talked to many who like the way she got the nomination.

Ya,there's a drug gang here who ran their own candidate for township supervisor two years ago. He got 38 votes. If only there had been a way of knowing who voted for him so they could have been arrested when they walked out the door,we could have cleaned up the neighborhood.

I'm a fiscally conservative nnalert. There are lots of GOP type (Big Spender) nnalert I won't vote for. Nothing new there.

If anyone is running unopposed then they will get it if no one other than the canidate himself votes so why spend the time to mark the ballot? Only thing that wouls stop that is if canidate had to get over 51% of ballots for him and if not there would be no winner and an open seat and have to go to anouther election and that is not leagal for that to happen. So if you do not like and chose to not fill in ballot or just think it is already won why bother the result is the same.

Anyone who always votes a straight party ticket (or expects others to) is a few bricks short of a wall...

I wonder what would happen if, say, Bugs Bunny got more write-in votes than an unopposed candidate.

Reminds me of a family story. My grandpa was running for president of the school board against one other candidate. He mentioned to someone that to be fair, he should vote for his opponent. The other fellow told him to just vote for himself.

Only 19 people voted and Grandpa received all 19 votes! He was embarrassed about that, as obviously his opponent had voted for him.

You got that right.

Actually, we had a Candidate's Night at our local Civic Center last Thursday so the public could meet the various candidates.

We had candidates all the way from local City Council and County offices to candidates for state and federal office. Each candidate had two minutes to introduce himself or herself. And each was timed and the timing was enforced. It had to be.

Some candidates, particularly those for federal office, are so full of themselves and so full of BS that they actually start to believe it themselves. They take themselves too seriously.

I was the only one who got a laugh out of the audience. I said, "Whenever someone asks me if I've lived her all my life, I tell them, 'Not yet'".

An interesting idea - BUT.....
The constitution of this country provides for SECRET ballots. Thank goodness for that. While that may have cleaned out your drug gang, it could also have been turned around used against the non-criminals as well.
Careful what you wish for. You might actually get it!

We had two local guys running for township road commissioner, and they and their wives met at the door of the polling station. Everybody there got a big kick out of their exchange - they all shook hands and said "May the best man win" and laughed. One of the contestants asked the other one if he'd run the motor grader for him if he lost the election, and the other guy said he would. The guy who lost the election said he and his wife promptly voted for the other man because he didn't want to mess with all the paperwork anyhow. Those two were a well respected team for many years, until their health declined and they had to quit.

Good memories of two real good men from our neighborhood.

Local politics are totally different than the state and national foolishness.

My father was town supervisor for quite a few years. In one of the elections the highway Super got two more votes on the same party line than pop did. It drove him nuts till the day he died trying to figure out who those two votes could have been.

We must have a bunch of folks with short walls. This county
always goes nnalert and many races are unopposed in the
general election. Our congressman, Bentilivito, a
conservative, lost the primary to a establishment lawyer type.
Just what congress needs, another lawyer...

Yes, some walls are just barely high enough to keep the kool-aid in, lol...

Last I heard, the law was being challenged, and probably going to change soon, but, Kentucky law sets a 1000' distance from polling place to where first signs can be located. In our county, which has 4 different polling locations, 3 of the 4 measure out their 1000' EXACTLY in the middle of a cemetery. Only right though, since 2/3rds the people buried in them voted last election....;) I'm still looking for external_link stickers on the tombstones.

If there is only one person to vote for I NEVER vote for them. I figure most of the time they have been there 2 term to many as it is

Most corruption in politics and the worst people are usually those that hold the lowest offices. If National or Statewide politicians pull some of the stuff I've known about at the local/county level they'd of been put in jail but with the Good Ole Boy system nothing ever gets done about it.

What gets me is that we have gone from the distant past when people voted for who they thought was the best "man" to now, when we vote for the least offensive dirt bag.

Years ago, a man ran for county commissioner in the next county to us. He didn't get many votes. The next day he was walking around town toting 2 chickens. Somebody asked about the chickens and he told them he was having a chicken BBQ for all who voted for him and he would freeze the leftovers. Funny thing is, he would have done a better job than his opponent. Tommy

Many years ago my father ran for town chairman. On election day his opponent stood outside the polling place and announced free beer at his place after the polls closed. Dad lost of course and didn't even get a free beer. I learned some new cuss words that day.

In my opinion, so many people voting only a straight party line instead of for the best person for the job is what got us into today's mess. A split party vote is often the best way to go.

Our county is paving a road from a highway to a Co-op fertilizer plant. The road pavement will stop less than a quarter of a mile from a Commissioner's house.

I was in the peanut gallery at the meeting when it came to a vote. The Commissioner who will benefit abstained from voting.

Don't know if the fact that I'd had a conversation with the County Attorney about it before hand entered into it or not.

When it looks like the vote is going to be lopsided I often vote for the loser just to keep the winner on his toes.

You gotta be kidding. The guys in DC shuffle billions around and no one says a word. Murder is common with some administrations.
