A lady I have done work for a few months ago called and wants me to mow her field again. The first time 3 months ago it was mostly tall grass. Now there is a tumble weed plant. Dad called them Russian thistle. The plant seams to grow in very dry ground, and only shows up in a dry year. I am wondering if any of you have this plant. It can get over 4-5 ft across. Stan

We saw them in Kansas when we were harvesting wheat. Farmer we cut for was upset because the neighbor let tumbleweeds grow and when the wind blew them across this farmers land the weeds scattered seeds. The wheat we cut was hailed and thin so these lines of tumbleweeds came up. Wherever a tumbleweed tumbled across the field last year there was a path of weeds this year. In North Dakota they are called Russian thistles.

Not a native plant, thought to arrive in US in flax seeds about 1870 from Eurasia to South Dakota.
