Towing Gooseneck

I have a low mileage bone stock 1979 F350 with a 351M and four speed flat bed. Anyone towing a gooseneck with a similar truck? Biggest load would be a 4020. Like to have some idea before installing a gooseneck hitch and brake controller. It's no "ball of fire" but I don't tow very many miles a year either.

That will work fine. They were no powerhouse, but they have moved a lot of stuff since they came out too. With that truck you can use a hydraulic brake controller that ties into the brake lines. They cost a bit more but work real nice.

I doubt that it will work at all but since I'm a nice guy I will take it off your hands for a bargain of course . Seriously like others have said, it will be fine. You won't be passing any powerstrokes but there have been a lot of miles put on those trucks while a gooseneck was pushing them.

Other that buying a lot of fuel it will work very well. Just don't get carried away about the size of trailer you get. The bigger the trailer the more they weigh.

You should be fine with that setup -- I have a triple axle on a half ton 97 chevy and have pulled up to a 7500 lb. tractor clean a cross iowa-- if it isnt going fast enough just mash the peddle some more -- 150 thousand miles and never touched her --Ploy Boy Roy

Being a 79 350; those usually had a 4.10 rear gear. Real good set up for towing. Will not set any speed records but will do an admirable job overall. I have pulled a lot of big loads with the old FE series (352;360;390) engines as well as 460. All did a good job.

You'll be fine some will tell you that you can't haul tractor that size without one of these but it will work just fine just don't get in a big hurry

Thanks for the replies.
I bought the truck this spring with 15,000 one owner miles. It's always been stored inside - looks and drives like a new truck. Been debating if I should sell it to a collector. Think I'll keep and use it. Going to replace the original bias ply tires and buy a new ignition module to carry as a spare.

That's Alice by the truck.

I can see a problem maybe. You have a lot of bed overhang and might not be able to get you hitch correctly over the axle and still be able to turn without the trailer hitting the truck bed corners.Measure carefully first.

The big 351M will be fine. Just make sure you keep good brakes on the trailer because the truck ain't gonna stop it... and don't plan on passing too many gas stations.
