just a little info on gas cans

I wouldn't have believed this except I just spent the last 2 days fixing the tractor, it seems some old steel military surplus gas cans, [ the 5 gall jerry can] have a tan colored liner applied inside them, after many years this liner starts flaking off, I had been having junk in the gas tank of one of the tractors and kept pulling little pieces of what appeared to be flakes of paint out of the tank, [ 2 foot long tweezers named reptile feeders are great for this] anyway my son who happened to be home on leave from the navy mentioned I should check that particular gas can, it was this jerry can liner coming apart , if you all have these around take a good flashlight and look inside the can and check yours, if it has one, and its flaking it will be obvious , spending a couple days cleaning the entire fuel system on a tractor really wasn't what I wanted to do

I dont use jerry cons or steel gas cans anymore.Too much rust was getting into the fuel systems.I use clean 5 gal plastic oil buckets.Gas seems to be cleaner that way

HI, I recall the jerry gas cans had a flex spout with a compression type seal, the cans with the tan liner were water cans and they had a latch type cover that flipped up to open. Just my memories. Pete

I am,well aware of the problem with these cans. I use a large funnel with a screen at the botton. I haven't done this yet, but painters use a large fine filter to strain paint. I plan to use this along with my funnel with the screen. I am sure my tanks have some of the crud you described inside. I have used a pump to pump from the jerry can into my tank, before I realized the problem. Stan

Thanks to our government protecting us from ourselves, I spent an hour last spring fishing parts of the new style "safety spout" gas cans out of the tank on my John Deere D. Darn spout flew apart when I was pouring gas, guess where all the pieces went.

Heres a tip that works great for filtering gas when you pour it from cans.

Use a pair of your wifes old panty hose / stockings. Stretch the material over your funnel and then pour your gas through it, into the funnel. double it up and it will stop even the finest rust particles, and also stops water. The gas just flows right through, and water beads up and runs off the side.

I hear you, Delta!! I used one gallon anti-freeze jugs for years for saw/lawnmower gas and five gallon hydraulic oil cans for bulk tractor gas. Actually wore out a gallon jug for saw gas it rode around in my wagon tool compartment so much. Broke down a few years ago and bought several five gallon Blitz cans for generator gas. I'm getting ready to convert my non-vented cans with tire valve stems like someone described a while back.

I stopped useing steel gas cans over 15 years ago and went to plastic.Had several of those cans and sold them on a yard sale and got enough out of them to buy new plastic. They were bought by a guy that collect old military stuff.

I have one of those for a new lawn mower bought this spring. I
promptly went to hardware store a bought a funnel. I take the
whole stupid safety spout off and pour from gas container into
funnel. Little one gallon container was $14.95 at tsc
seriously???

Did you try Fleet & Farm? I found mine at one in town, here. But.... that was a couple of years ago. Otherwise, check with an outfitter of rock climbing trucks (Jeeps, Scouts, etc.). Unless laws have changed in the last year or two, those guys usually run/ran red jerry cans.

WHAT YOU CALL A LINER IS FOR water cans!!! They look the same but the cap is usually bigger and is a latch type not a screw cap. When new the epoxy is a creamy white color. My buddy has all kinds of military vehicles and stuff. I have a boat load of Eagle saftey cans with the explosion screens in them. Love them and have no problems. Pick almost all of them up at the two local flee markets for good prices. A few weeks ago out at the Hershey car show I got a 5 gallon for $ 5.oo. It was almost BRAND new!! Just a little faded paint.

I have 25 of the plastic cans. bought some new but found most, All have the caps and only I use them, metal ones allways seem to have trash issues

this one should be fuel it has the screw on cap about 4 inches around with 4 loops on it, and the spout sticks in the hole and you then push the lever on the side down to lock it good spout bad can now

The spouts on gas can today re crap. And having to spend $20 for a can or half that for a replacement spout is crazy. A friend of mine recently brought me an Eagle safety can he picked up at an auction. I bought a funnel for the can to replace the missing one. Other than having to remove the funnel to fill the can it works great.

I have since bought another one since I usually buy gas 10 gallons at a time. You can get these cans on Amazon for a bit over $40, cheaper than what I have been spending per year on cans and spouts. No more broken plastic spouts, tire valve vents breaking off from reacting with the gas, and overall pain in the a$$.

I like the 2.5 gallon, wide mouth poly pesticide jugs. Come two in a heavy duty box. Triple rinse with water and amoniaa and good to go. Can't tip over in the box. And 20 lbs is just right to lift up above your shoulder.
Large mouth will accept the large diesel hose handles.
