carbon deposits in the head

When I pulled the head off this 9N, I found chunks of black stuff in the head, over the first two cylinders. If you took a scissors and cut a marshmallow in two, they were about that size. If you run an engine with carbon bouncing around, would it sound like you have a loose piston?
Thank you

Hi, you would get a more specific response to this question on the N model, if you click on the forum index and scroll down to the 9N2N8N forum. I have an 8N and use the N forum a lot.

Yes carbon deposits will make it sound like a rod is knocking. Had that happen on a chevy 6 cylinder one time in a pickup truck I owned. The noise slowly faded away after about on block.

Yes, it can make noise. It can also cause damage, like a broken piston. Might try rocking the pistons in the bore, there will be some rock but all should be close to the same. Also be sure they are flat across the block deck, not tilted or one not coming up as high as the others.

If all looks well, try cleaning the carbon out and see how it sounds, could be ok...

But then why is it making so much carbon?
Excess oil consumption? May be time for a rebuild anyway. Running too rich? Carb problem or clogged air filter. Open/missing thermostat?

To me it sounds like a rod knock. That is a lot of carbon. I have seen amounts similar to what you describe shrouding valves. It's probably oil burning and you should consider removing valves and cleaning them as well.

That carbon may be in the ring grooves on your pistons too. I bought a used 1966 Ford Mustang with the 6 cylinder in 1971. It kept fouling new plugs so I pulled the cylinder head. I had never seen so much carbon. I did a complete teardown and all the piston rings were stuck. Hal
