dehyrated onions

Has anyone tried dehydrating onions with any success?

I have an excess of onions this year and I would like to slice them into rings, then dehydrate them.

Then I could add a handful when making soups or chili.

You shouldn't have any problem.

I buy minced onions in the spices section at the grocery store. They are chopped, then dried.

No problem except for the odor. I have dried them in an electric dehydrater that I have in the gargage. I dry peaches, apples etc. When I started drying onions the odor drifted to the kitchen which was awful. I then tried to dry them in the shop but I couldn't stand the odor.

I store onions in egg baskets hanging in the garage where it's cool. They keep pretty well if you first leave them in the sunshine a while to dry off.

Easy to do. Cut them up into small pieces then lay them on a cookie sheet in an oven at 100-150 degrees and let them dry. The smaller the pieces the fast and better they will dry. I do that with garlic all the time then I run it threw a coffee grinder and make garlic powder and you could do the same with onions if you wanted to make onion powder

I store all I can in the basement, I get a few that start to rot later in the winter. My garage gets too cold in the winter. I would have onion ice cubes!
