12 volt conversion and proofmeter

I've got a 58 ford 851 and fixing to do a 12 volt conversion on it. Is there anyway to hook the proof meter back up? Anyone know of an alternator with a rear output tach drive that will work?

I'm not sure what you're asking.
Your proofmeter cable should be connected to the back of your hydraulic pump.
Is yours not?
The 65-75 Fords did use a generator with an attachment on the back for the proofmeter but not the Hundreds.

I thought the tach was driven from the generator. Previous owners did a 12 volt conversion. I see now the output on thehydrolic pump. Thanks for your help!

It does show engine hours but also is a Tachometer that shows rpms/pto speed in different gears on the tractor.

OK I was thinking that was what it was . Never heard it called that before. Must be a regional thing. We just always called them an Hour Meter.

You are correct. That is all it is, just a light bulb connection for running in the dark. The cable hooks to the back of the governor for actual operation of the proof meter. I use to hear of people unhooking the speedometer cable on cars (back in the 60's) to keep the mileage low for resale in a few years. Of course the speedo didn't work either then...lol I guess the same thing could apply to a tractors hour meter from way back when they were still mechanical. If the cable is unhooked, it would keep "low" hours on it for resale.
