What powers the older ford truck airbags, when they deploy? 2 years ago , on Christmas eve, my son hit an elk cow, at 60 mph. The front end of the 94 f150, was totaled, and the drivers airbag blew out, in Randy,s face. The cab was filled with floating black particles, that looked like acetelene smoke, or soot. Two days after Christmas, I was still getting some black on Kleenex, when I blowed my nose. Charlies post reminded me of this, so I asked.

I have been told that the older air bags contained Fulminate of Mercury as the propellant. Same stuff as in pistol and rifle primers. That may not be correct, but it was what I was told. I had an IDIOT hit me head on and totaled my 1993 Taurus, and the air bags deployed. The smoke was so thick I couldn't see out of the windows. Rancid as well.
