Aluminum washer use?

I'm trying to install an older electrical water temperature gauge kit that didn't work out at the time in my 1940 Ford 9N. I have the brass threaded sender adapters from both an electrical & mechanical units and both kits have a slightly thick aluminum washer that fits over the threaded 3/8-18 NPT adapter? What would the aluminum washer be exactly used for? Thanks in advance for any thoughts or ifo...Jim

The aluminum washer is softer than the metals being joined, and acts as a gasket to seal the joint between them. Oftentimes a copper washer will be used for the same purpose.

That tractor never had a OEM temp gauge.

Lots have had a farmerized gauge installed, as yours apparently has.

Even farmerized gauge installs generally use pipe thread fittings, which don't use sealing washers, aluminum, or otherwise.

So WHAT do you have going on?

+1. If the threads on the sensor are straight you will bottom out and need the gasket. If tapered NPTM, as said, teflon tape or pipe dope will seal when it runs the threads up tight and the gasket is useless. I find more and more alum rather than copper with the high cost of it these days.

Thanks guys. I used a homemade pipe w/welded in NPT fitting in the upper radiator hose of the 9N several yrs. ago for mechanical temp gauge. It has worked great.
I'm attempting to re-purpose (1955 chevy 210 car) the electrical type that I had originally tried to plug into the drain-cock hole on side of the 9N block. Way too cool at that location to get even a reading on the 9N.
The chevy 235 6 cylinder has a 5/8-18 NF threaded mechanical plug into the 6 cyl. head. I ruined the working original in wrestling the '55 gauge cluster cause most of the dash was not functioning(light bulbs). I used a 5/8-18 NF die to recut the threads on the 3/8-18 NPT brass fitting and it would or could now need a gasket to seal the NF threads. I was just trying to confirm that those aluminum washers were indeed gaskets. Thought that I had to buy copper doughnut looking gaskets???
