Tandem tractor hitch

Looking for information/plans for Tandem tractor hitch; driving the back tractor with the front tractor without front wheels, articulating in the middle. These hitches were made in the 1950s.

Was there a company that made them?? The ones around here were homemade setups. Great Uncle put two WD9s together. The back one wouldn't start on gas so he pulled it around with the front one until it would go.

There was a company in England that put Fordson Majors in tandem. As far as I know, no large concern in North America did that. The tractor was called Doe Dual Drive (Tripple D) or some such.

There probably were some small shops over here that would hook tractors in tandem if someone wanted them to.

I've only ever seen this setup once, it was two WDs hooked with... Hydraulic rams to turn with? Drive from the rear tractor, and both had only the rear tires -- no front tires. Probably not even the one you're specifically talking about, either.

There was a Massey-Harris 44D tandem owned by a collector in Illinois I think in the Massey newsletter awhile back. At the Winamac IN Case feature there was a DC tandem this summer too.

They did a segment on Classic Tractor Fever about a guy in the US who did those conversions. I can't remember his name.

John Kinzenbaw was one of them, also. Founder of Kinze equipment

I took a lot of photos of that Case tandem at Winamac this summer. Can email to you. It had a great "slave cylinder" for the clutch. It looked great.
A couple years ago there was a tandem at the Valpraiso show , might have some photos of that one also. joe

Connecting two John Deere Rs or Ds in tandem was
apparently not uncommon in the Canadian Praries
back in the '50s before large tractors became
available. I remember seeing pictures of a John
Deere Dealership in one of the prarie provinces of
Canada, named Double R, who built and marketed
John Deere Double R tractors. Tandem Ds were
apparently less common. However there was a
feature story in one of the antique tractor mags
several years ago about the rescue and restoration
of a Tandem D in Washington state. The owner was
connected to a voc tech high school and much of
the restoration was done by students. Also several
videos on You Tube. Really neat piece of
equipment. Google the subjects and you will find
some neat pictures.

Our local tractor club has a Case 500 tandem and a JD R/WD-9 tandem. The latter took some creative engineering. Its fully hydraulic articulated steering and the pump is mounted on the R flywheel.

The manufactured ones were pretty simple. The back
tractor just pushed. I assumed you had to clutch
it or at least throttle back on a tight corner so
it did not push the front tractor sideways.

Some of them were made using the front wheels of the front tractor and taking the front wheels ohh the rear tractor and mounting to drawbar of front and extending the steering shaft from front tractor to seat on rear tractor. Not sure how he hooked up the clutch but was before any thinking of slave cylinders that would be easy way to do. He had a Farmall M & 450 hooked together that way but seperated them again after tillage and put front cultivator on one.

I have some old Tractor Supply catalogs and tandem hitches were available off the shelf from them at one time. Other farm stores probably had them as well. Mike

my Dad ran 2 m's in tandem front tractor driven and they put live hydralics on it which operated the clutch and throttle of the back m pulled 5-16 Jd plow any where in 3rd gear and had 2 - 12 ft discs on a squadron hitch in 4th gear that was AC iirc, t5his was latre 50s early 60s. A nieghbor had 2 F 20 hooked up pulling 4 bottoms another had a Case 400 and a Jd 70 with a 7 bottom plow. with the 70 in front what a sound that was kj

Would anyone be able to send pictures of a TANDEM TRACTOR HITCH ? I have several JD D's and would like to fabricate a TANDEM HITCH.
Thanks
Bob.....
