Timing a 1984 IH MV404

I have a 1984 IH rollback and I need to set the timing.I have some manuals and called dealerships with no help.Can anyone tell me the timing setting and what cylinder do they time off of.Ive been told some IH trucks time off of #8 cylinder

The 266, 304, 345, and 392 time off of number eight. All the others time off of number one.

Thanks,Do you know what degree,also if I pull the vaccum hose of and suck on the advance the advance moves but the sound of the motor doesn't change.Any advice would be appreatiated

James, at idle, with the vacuum advance line disconnected, it looks like 9º BTDC would be typical.

I did see an emissions version or two that were at 4º, though.

Pretty much typical for ANY gas truck engine of that era.
